Does anyone have a 420a with just a HKS or Apexi muffler? not the full exhaust but muffler. Im thinking about getting a universal one but wanted to know how it sounds/looks on a 420a eclipse

If you are talking performance wise you wont feel any gains whatsoever with just a muffler, even with a full exhaust gains are extremely small if that is the only mod you have, however the muffler should change the sound, and i personally love the looks of the apexi.

I used to have a Tsudo N1 (Apex'i clone) muffler with the stock exhaust. There were no dramatic performance improvements, but the sound did change. I installed it using nothing but exhaust reducers, bends and clamps from Advance Auto. I think it looked good while it was on there.

yeah because i was thinking about ordering the full Tsudo n1 exhaust, but i love the up and out angled exhaust like hks, so i was wondering if i just got the muffler if it would give that impression

The muffler itself won't do that... the angle has more to do with how you install it. For the hassle involved, it might be worth giving your local exhaust shop $20 or $30 to install it.

yes it would give that same impression as a full cat back would but i would recomend getting a full cat back system of your choice that way you have the right optimum flow and dont have to deal with leaks and youll have the right amount of compression also // i had just a muffler to start also and it sounded gr8te and gave it a lil more off a push but i upgraded to a full greddy cat back system and it feels the same but performs better...

okay, so i think im going to just get the tsudo and play around with the angle myself.

BUT do the universal mufflers come with hangers? and does the apexi come on a angle?

The universal mufflers do not come with hangers. I didn't have a welder when I installed mine, so I improvised and used a large hose clamp and 1/8" steel cable.

Keep in mind that the universal mufflers will likely have a 2.5" inlet whereas the stock exhaust pipe is 2.25".

no thay dont come with hangers but you can go to a local auto parts store and get a universal muffler clamp for like 16 bucks...

i have a apexi dunk universial muffler the one with the 5" tip on a 95 talon esi non turbo i had the shop just chop off my old muffler and weld some brackets to it and turned it sideways ive havent had any problems with it sounds great when its parked everyone wants to no what turbo im running but i tell them its stock

Some companies sell just the axle-back exhaust section, which will have the muffler at the same angle as their full cat-back or turbo-back systems.

Hey thanks. and unfortunately no i dont have way to record it . but it has a deeper tone compared to the high pitch tone of other catback systems i love it! and not as much of a head ache on the interstate LOL:D

wow looks great.. very sleeper..:thumb:

That nice apex sound is all in the resonators.
-I pulled my apex muffler off at the flange after the resonators, and it made almost no change in sound.
-I then pulled off right after the cat (had one welded in) and it sounded like a tractor.
-The only thing in between the cat and the muffler on a apexi exhaust is a couple bends and 2 big resonators.

You will never get that nice tone by just throwing on a muffler.

it all depends on what muffler you install on your car if you go with a cheep 20.00 doller muffler then NO you wont get that perfect tone BUT there are those mufflers you can buy that are a lil pricey that have that deep brawly sound..... search

If you get a full exhaust system you will never regret it... forget wasting money and time here and there trying to mimic the HKS or Apexi because your only gonna get the look not the sound. trust me I have no cat and its nice quiet clean sound. Just saying if thats what you really want I would just safe up and get it. :thumb:

I had an apexi n1 muffler laying around that i threw on my dd. It sounds pretty sexy. I like it alot. Make sure you weld it on if you can. I used those "u" shaped brackets and ended up dodging traffic one day trying to save it. Ill try to remember to post a video on youtube with it so you can hear what it sounds like. I agree with everyone else tho. Get an exhaust system.
