Hey guys,

Well I'm finally getting around to do my first timing belt job (engine still in the car) and I've been doing a ton of research in reading and watching videos. But I just wanted to consult to make sure I got everything right.

Anyway, my lovely stretched and edge-cut timing belt is nearing it's end, but still surprisingly has great tension in it. I will be replacing everything with:

-gates standard timing belt kit (t617) with all pulleys
-still keeping the balance shafts, but replacing tensioner and belt
-OEM tensioner
-oil pan bolts, and RTVing the oil pan (this is what chewed up my timing belt)

So I pretty much understand most of the process, but the only thing I'm confused on is removing/setting tension. To my understanding, the only point of the special tool is to remove or put on tension TO AN EXISTING MOUNTED TENSIONER. I'm assuming its just unbolting the tensioner that is on my car, putting my new one in a vice, then mount it back onto the car?

thanks guys. Oh, and I know you guys love pictures so here's my current timing belt.

Site's been around 10+ years, during which time the proper timing belt installation and tensioning technique has remained the same. I don't think we need another thread on this- search around a little and you'll see it's a well-discussed topic.
