Well I kinda stopped updating becuase it seemed like noone was to interested in this. It's really not a project for your average diy person. I suspect 99/100 people on this board are not capable of performing this conversion.

However I did get it done.

Heres the pictures I got. Kurt Dr.x Stuart's Photos - my car! | Facebook

It runs and drive well. Hooks up good. I'm glad I did it. However I would never do it this way again. I would definatly use a solid axle rear instead. Much easier to work with.

Expect a write up sometime in the next month.

That is probably accurate, which puts it at 950 people on this forum who are capable and out of them, 1/1000 would undertake such project. And guess who that one person is? ;)

Anyway, good job for sticking with the project! This is a perfect example how anything is possible if you put your effort into it (no matter how ill advised it may be ;) )

WOW I wish I could have seen the pics... I have been looking for a AWD and all there are around here are FWD... I have a wrecked AWD in the yard and thought it would be just a matter of swapping parts. LOL Nice job!

Nice job man. From the looks of it, it looks like you didn't have too many problems. Did everything simply just bolt up?

you can not just bolt up 1st gen AWD parts into a FWD. A lot of measuring and fabbing parts up to get this swap done.

I'm aware of this. That's why I wanted to see the pictures. I have a really nice Talon DL. It originally was a 1.8L non turbo. I've converted it to turbo (wiring harness, motor, trans, etc.) I'm just interested in seeing the pictures of how the FWD to AWD conversion was done, to see if it's a project I'd be interested in undertaking.

I have a question to the op, what was needed to get the front of an awd to fwd converted. A friend of mine bought a non-turbo fwd car and i guess someone decided to do all the work to the back to make it all wheel drive then quit so all that is need is the front half of the awd swap.

I have did this so you can add one more to the list. I could not find a cleaner car than mine. It was origialy a 2wd n/t auto and I converted it to 5 speed then turbo then awd. This is for the experienced diy person. I used a fuel cell and didn't have to cut much out. Just the rear sway bar mount and where my fuel cell lines go. If I had it to do over I would use a fox body 8.8 rear end. They are close to the same wheel base and easy to find. When my 3 bolt breaks I might still do it. I also made a one piece driveshaft.

Its just steel with the stock yoke and rear u-joint. Car wont be done untill spring. We will see how it holds up.

So you are using a single, steel driveshaft? Several people have tried this with aluminum and it didn't work (hormanic vibration), but a steel driveshaft, while much heavier, just might behave differently enought to work.

How about some pics of your car showing the AWD conversion, and what you did to make it work?

I run a stock driveshaft. The front carrier bearing mounts get cut off the floorpan, and go right on the FWD car. Then I fabricated some rear mounts. Pretty simple actually.

Ya, I also have polyurithane motor mounts to help keep the motor from moving too much and I had to space the front two mounting points 2"s for the irs subframe to sit exactly the same as it did in the awd car. I measured and measured untill it was right. It would probably be best to have one carrier bearing. however with me having a welded center diff and the switchable 2wd/4wd transfer case I will have it in 2wd mostly for the street and switch to awd by pulling a cable for the track.

Hey 92tsifwd.. how are you going to use an 8.8 out of a mustang?? you need alot more room for exhaust and the rearend as the whole thing moves.. also what about gear ratio? but i see you have a MT so they do make 3.54 for 8.8 i believe.. also what about just wedling axle tubes to the stock rear diff and getting some custom Moser axles and using disks off an 8.8 or something.. just use the ford 9" style withe axle bearing on the axle to hold them in
