After market SMIC

I have purchased a black box set up off of DSMTUNERS classified section(through PM), and frequent DSMTALK a lot. I have been searching for a Dejon or Hahn SMIC for a long time, as I am on a T28 and don't want a FMIC. I just realized a brand new Hahn SMIC was sold on the classified section of this site on Wednesday for $150!! I about THREWUP as I missed this deal after a very long time of searching. How long, or what is needed to post a WTB in the classified section of this forum?

I still cant believe I messed this deal!! A never used Hahn SMIC for $150!!

Also check out the stock SMIC's from MKIV Supras. There is definitely some fab work, but they can be had for very little money and are a huge improvement over stock.

Yes, I am familiar with the Supra option, but all installs I have seen do not look pretty. I will check out the DSM classifieds on Facebook, I was unaware of this. I just had to vent, I have been looking for a long time. I almost got a 30K miles Dejon a few weeks ago out of NewYork, but sale fell threw. I was offline for 2 days, got on and went straight to classifieds, just to see a never used Hahn SMIC sold for $150! O man, my gut hurt so bad. Its the last mod I need to finish my build, why cant a company just produce a decent upgraded SMIC anymore!?

If it makes you feel a little bit better it was a used intercooler, but the seller just never used it.

Nice car Type1DSMr! I also have a 97 tsi. Its the third turbo car I have had, and I really enjoy it. I went from a Stealth RT/TT, to a heavly upgraded srt4 (no traction), now back to a tsi (AWD F T W). After seeing this sale(and missing it), I think I will give up looking for a good Dejon/Hahn SMIC, and look into a ETS street intercooler. It really sucks no one makes an upgraded SMIC anymore, the small 16g and the T28 are a great little turbo and doesn't need a FMIC, just a good SMIC. But the ETS street (20") might work without much pressure lose. And at that, they don't even make the 20" anymore, they have to custom make them per request. Pretty soon, only overlarge FMIC will be sold, what is the world coming to!

Just get a punishment racing fmic. not very expensive and does the job. Nobody wants smic because it cant be seen by other people.

Th3ory remember you have been PMing me about ETS intercoolers and Eagle Talons . I don't want to clog up the thread, but I just ordered an ETS intercooler for the Talon to keep foglights . Back on topic if you want a side mount used the MK4 supra or just get a front mount. Remember only the 20" ETS keeps fog lights on a Talon, but VRSF or Punishment are good also.

Yeah, I understand. Company's will make more profit spending time making FMIC rather than a SMIC. Just the look of driving down the road with a huge FMIC adds like 20hp, haha. Maybe this is a sign, I don't need to find a good SMIC for my T28 build, I need to find a decent FMIC and then look for a gt35r... hum I might need to rethink my build now

I am just concerned with any pressure lose going to a FMIC. I only plan on running 20ish PSI. I will look into punishment fmic also. Thanks for the input guys

Usually in the kits you have to add the j-pipe. You can use all kits for the t-28 without the j-pipe. The VRSF kit allows you to to bolt up to the t25/28. Also, you may have to trim the Talon front bumper to use the VRSF, at least I had too.

Ok, I wasn't sure how a J-pipe worked with a 16g type set up. But, it is the actual addition of the J-pipe that allows the flow of boost to get to the normal stock type intercooler pluming. Ok, that does make sense. I didn't know this, this is great to learn.

I have heard people having pressure drop with larger FMIC's. I would say, if the turbo is paired with a matching FMIC, it shouldn't be a problem (A large turbo is fine for a FMIC). My issue is, the T28 just isn't that big (I believe it's only rated at 550ish cfm). I would be concerned if the FMIC was to large for the flow that a T28 can put out. Granted, I do respect the T28, as it hits 20psi VERY fast, and it pulls hard. But, it just seems as though it would be better paired with a larger SMIC. But, I am starting to look at FMIC's now, and I do like a few of the smaller ones.

18psi with cooler air will yield more power than 20psi with hotter air. Your not wrong by wanting to go with a larger SMIC but I don't think a "medium" sized FMIC will hurt your performance at all. I actually know a certain someone who is running a 68HTA with a Dejon SMIC.

If you hold out for the large SMIC, ensure you do your homework on fitment as the inlet/outlets can vary for 1g and 2g versions. Also, the inlet/outlet diameters vary as well depending on the age of the SMIC. The fitment is soo much better than the Supra SMIC which hangs down a bit low and pushes against the side of the bumper causing a bulge. You will also need to modify the ducting or fabricate ducting to accommodate the larger core. If you go with an FMIC, you could look into having it anodized black to keep a lower profile. Personally, I would prefer the large SMIC for your current setup to complement the OEM "appearance".

I like the sleeper look. Here is a picture of when I first got the car, I need to take a few new pictures now that I have detailed the car. I will go with lower springs and wheels in the future. I am on the hunt for a pair of Konig villains, just as hard to find as a SMIC.

Humm, well, lets take two pvc pipes, say about a foot long. One has an I.D. of 1 inch, the other 4 inch I.D. Now blow threw them both. The smaller I.D. should be harder to blow threw, this is because there is less pressure drop.

Get a big FMIC and be done with it. You'll thank yourself later down the road when you want to go bigger and won't have to upgrade the intercooler again. With a SMIC you're limited to the size of the bumper duct, which is tiny.

If you want the stealth look you can always just get a black intercooler. The change in spool up is incredibly negligible.

That's a good idea also, knowing the T28 will probably be upgraded in the future. Less work and money down the road.

Youve got that backwards and you're way over thinking this. Dont just be concerned about pressure. Its mass that's important. Thermodynamics at work.

If you do end up going the stealth fmic route, cxracing sells a black intercooler core which I'm pretty certain is identical to the punishment racing intercooler core except it's black. Dimensions and pictures appear to be the same: 29x11x3

I am a huge fan of the upgraded smic though. A guy named Greg Collier did pretty well with an upgraded SMIC.
