Hey everyone, I recently bought an e16g that a member had ran and before install I decided to measure thrust play. Looks as if it has about .004 thust play dry, I've read that oil takes up most of that once its installed but I also read on another post that .002 is the limit so I figured I would ask. As for the test I did it by taking the hot side off and pressing on the shaft one way then feeler gauge it between the wheel and the sheild and vice versa. I realize there was a small room for error when measuring but I don't have a dial indicator on hand so I hope this method still gaves me an idea of what was going on. Thanks for any help!

None, and side to side should be very minimal as well.

That's possible. Did you just buy the turbo or was it running. If alot of thrust shaft play it would be blowing smoke.

Imo, you should run the turbo on the vehicle and see what happens. Shaft play don't really mean the turbo is blown or something along those line. My old ebay turbo didn't have any shaft play when I blew the seals in it.

None that you can actually feel. The spec is .002", allowing .001" on either side of the thrust plate for oil to do it's job. You may feel a *tiny* click on a turbo with no oil in it, but that should disappear as soon as the cartridge gets oil.

If you feel ANY in/out play while the turbo has been getting oil (i.e.- while installed on a car), the turbo should be rebuilt immediately or wheel damage will occur.

Well, I installed the turbo and in and out shaft play is nearly identical....I'm pretty upset as it wasn't advertised as an out of spec 16g by the member and as you all know, coolant, oil, rebuild kits, its not cheap and it definatly all add up. Anyhow I know trader greg is proven anyone else have a rebuild kit they've used on the mhi e16g they would like to share? Thanks

So I rebuilt the 16g with a trader greg kit and it was nice and solid with no thrust play and minimal radial play after the rebuild. Maybe 100 miles in I noticed there's a tiny bit of thrust play, nowhere near as much as it had before, and still a tiny amount but still enough to feel(ill have to wait until I start lab days at school to check since I can use their dial indicators LOL, yes... I'm cheap). I'm using all oem lines, 1g feed from head and 2g return. I did notice a small leak at the head feed line due to reusing copper washers today but its not enough to raise a red flag. To my question...does this sound normal? No thrust play to a small but perceptable amount after 100 miles with oem lines? Thanks!

Shoot on them tiny turbos my motto was if it boost and don't smoke drive the damn thing.:hellyeah:

I ran numerous 14b and 16g turbo all used and beat on them they where always doing work just fine.
