Shaft play?

I just picked up a 14b that is ported from a friend. It has no up and down play at all. none. But if i put my hands on each side of the turbo and use a figure and push pretty hard the shaft will move maybe 5-10 thousands of an inch. I mean I have to really push. Its not much at all. And the shaft spins freely and very smooth. Is this normal? He said he pulled it, ported and rebuilt it and he did a great job. He takes his time and does things right. I have installed many turbo kit and built engines I just dont know what factory tolerances the 14b has?

I wouldnt think it would be too bad if it only move 5-10 thousandths, and has no shaft play what so ever. But then again when it builds boost the compressor wheels force might push it from side to side. Who knows, might be one of those things you have to install to see.

I checked it again. Im just being worried like most of the stuff i do to my car. The only play I am feeling is the lack of oil in the journal.

Yeah I figured that too. Always has slim shaft play without the oil.

There should be NO noticeable in/out shaft play. If you can feel any "click" at all, there is more of a tolerance than the oil can take up which will get rapidly worse.

Turn the turbo upside down and pour some oil in the drain hole...probably around 2oz or so, then check to see if the play goes away. If there is still a noticeable "click" then the turbo was not rebuilt.

You cant feel the shaft play by just pushing on one end of the shaft. I can only feel it if I have one finger from one hand on one side and the same the other way. I never noticed anything before but I for some reason just really wanted to check. t is so small I mean so small that I can barely feel anything. I put a dial indicator gauge on it and it was hard to read cause the end play is so small but i didnt see over .002 play with no oil. Any tighter than that and I think the shaft would have trouble spinning freely.

And there is no click to the in and out. Most people wouldnt even notice it at. Im just being anal about the parts i install.

yea if the shaft play is that minimal than maybe its nothing to worry about?

Some side to side is not as bad, as long as it is minimal. In and out is what you deffinately do not want. From what you are describing, I think you should be good to go.
