I've been through vfaq and have the site about memorized...

Will a FMIC do anything benificial for a stocker with a MBC running in a 10lbs range?

I've done all the free mods, vacum line deletes, MBC, real boost gauge. Will a air/fuel ratio gauge do me any good if I can't do anything about running lean? meaning no AFC.

Anyone know where to find part numbers for fuel pumps that would work in my 91 GSX that would be equal to the flow rate of the walbro 255? Master brand perferd because thats what we sell at work. Advance Auto.

I have cracks in my 1g exhaust manifold. Should I worry about getting a header if I'm mostly stock or just get a 2g manifold and call it good till I do the 300hp mods?

and one silly question: Does my under hood temp really affect anything? Should I consideder a cooling vent through my hood or fenderwells?

thanks,
Mike

first off a fmic help whatever it goes on, it drops the temp dramatically...the underhood temps are fine, just keep you heat shields on there

as far as the manifold, it depends on how bad the cracks are in the manifold...a 2g manifold never hurts anything...and there not that expensive

A FMIC would help dramatically. There is much more surface area on the IC for it to cool the compressed air down.

I wouldn't go with a Master fuel pump. You should go with Bosch. You have availability of them now, they are better quality, and they come with better waranty (lifetime). You should have gotten a Bosch fuel pump book a couple of weeks ago on your truck ( I also work at AAP). Just look through and find one that pumps somewhere around 255lph, with about the same diameter. If I get some time tomorrow, I will browse through it and see what I can find.

The cooler the underhood temp is, the better. It will help the intake temp, engine temp, breakdown of components, and much more. Heat is one of our worst enemies. As long as you have the heat shield on the exhaust manifold, it will help quite a bit. If you want to go further, they make header wrap that you can wrap your downpipe in. They also make a turbo wrap that you put on the exhaust side of the turbo that also takes alot of heat away.

If you want to do a cooling vent, go for it. Just make sure no water can get to any of the electrical components under the hood and make sure none will get to the air filter.

If you suspect that you're running lean, what you can do in the meantime are your basic maintenance checks, replace your fuel filter, check for leaks along the intake tract, and re-wire your fuel pump to run directly off of the battery.

A narrowband air/fuel gauge is useless no matter what. A more useful investment would be a datalogger (such as PocketLogger) that will give you a much better picture of what's happening inside your engine.

At that boost level, you won't feel a difference w/ a FMIC. The only difference will be knock if anything at all. Cooler air = less knock. It's a good thing you have a 1G, otherwise it would hurt you to run a FMIC @16psi. 1Gs have better airflow through the front bumpers than 2Gs. Also, if you're gonna be runnin 16psi and not racing, you don't need a FMIC.

More questions:

Whats a good level of boost to have all the time (mbc and I'm lazy). Right now my boost is turned all the way down so the wastegate is controling it and not the BC. Since I just did my head gasket I have been afraid to turn it up.

I feel like I lost power down low. What could be up with that?

Should I recheck the Tourqe on my head? It's been on for about 2 weeks now.

Where should my timing be at?

Is a lighter flywheel worth anything when I redo my clutch again? This ones brand new but it's stock.

Do I have to get a 3in exhaust for performance or will mine due with a good flowing muffler. No fart cans for me!

If it matters my mods are:
I have everything running tip-top. Except the exhaust cracks in the Manifold, I am still in search for a replacement.
FP rewire. (PITA-btw)
The intake and exhaust sides have been gasket matched. (not that it has helped any)
I have wrapped the downpipe like someone suggested and the cat is removed.
No Vac or EGR or emmisions.

thanks again

NObody has any answers? I ordered a 2g exhaust Mani off ebay and I just got it! And you guessed it, I got a cracked 1g!~(

Your level of boost can vary. I tend to think of 17psi as max for a stock headgasket, but I've been running my 2g w/ 16g at 19psi with no problems (so far...). With a stock turbo, i set mine at like 15psi and called it a day.

A new exhaust would help airflow obviously. This will become more important as you upgrade your turbo. However, with a stock turbo, your exhaust shouldn't be too bad considering you took out the cat. You can find cheap 2.5" exhaust systems being traded for relatively cheap. My first exhaust system was a 2.5" Dynamax system I picked up for $100 from downpipe back.

A lighter flywheel is not needed, especially with a stock clutch and little to no racing. The exhaust w/out a cat might be fine for now but an upgraded upper I/C pipe will make a difference you can feel. I would grab at least 550cc injectors to run 18psi though.

17 PSI with a stock headgasket? That's not even close to the limit of the stock gasket, try 35+ psi and 700+whp.

mine blew at 25 psi but not at 30 psi OMG ! it's about not having knock (detonation). anything can handle lots of power. Detonation causes uncontrollable pressure spikes on the piston tops and cylinder walls (including the head gasket). I had too much knock. The higher the boost the more sensative the stock head gasket gets. It's a good "idiot fuse".

A FMIC will always help. low compressor temps (temps after boosting) are always very important.

Low intake temps are also very, very important. thus depending on your setup underhood temps affect performance not just reliability.

The stock 2G intake manifold! . . . getting guys into the 10s for YEARS!
