Whats goin on everyone? I am taking on a little "project" with my data logger and Im looking for info from anyone who might have done something similar before. Heres whats going on:

I have a 1g with ABS. I am sure you all know that when you leave the data cable plugged in to the diagnostic port, it disables the ABS. I was going to do the switch mod, but i wanted to make sure that I had the info right before I went to cutting wires. The information I have collected for the mod came from http://www.hywell.org/absmod.html. On this page, the guy is talking about cutting the wire that goes from pin 10 on the dignostic port to the ABS control unit and wiring a switch in line.

Here is a picture of where he tapped it in:

The switch I have is a 3 prong guy. The leads are for power, load, and ground. I took a multimeter to leads 1 and 2(power and load, pin 3 is ground) and found that continuity is broken between these contacts when the switch is off. So, for wiring the switch, I would just cut the wire that goes from pin 10 to the ABS control unit and run one wire to pin 1 on the switch and another wire from pin 2 back to the other end of the cut wire, right? Then all I would have to do is turn the car on, then turn the switch on, correct? No more disabled ABS?

This is the picture I REALLY had a question about though:

What is the extra red wire that goes from the back of the data cable connector to the fuse panel? Is that for power to the switch or something?

----

Ok, so that was the first thing... the other thing I was trying to achieve is being able to charge the Palm in car. I actually took a Dremel to the coin tray and the cradle for the Palm and made a custom mount for the Palm right in the center console. I was planning on grabbing power from the cigarette lighter, but I ran in to a problem. The cars power is 12v DC while the Palm charges at 6v DC. (Also should state that Im using a Palm Vx..-they have a weird plug that attaches to the back of the serial connector on the cradle to plug the power source in to charge the Palm.) So, I thought I would buy one of those car chargers that you plug in to the cigarette lighter and splice the Palm connector to it(plus, it has an output of 6v). Second problem!! The car charger only has 2 wires. The wire that goes from the wall plug to the connector on for the Palm has 5 wires in it. So, Im just wondering if anyone else has tried this and if they have any ideas for a better way to do this???

Thanks for any help!

Please do not bump your posts.

The red wire in that picture is for power to the active datalogger circuits. Most inexpensive cables will be passive and don't need a power connection.

Got the switch situation figured out... it was terribly easy(which is awesome)!!!!

Still dont have any idea how to charge the Palm off of the car. I have been searching here, Google... a lot. I just cant seem to find how to do it.

I dont really want to multimeter with all of those leads... Im just paranoid about getting shocked.

Anyway, here is a picture of how everything looks:

PLEASE HELP ME... :sosad: .

I also have a datalogger question, figured I could jump on this thread (if this is bad manners I'll edit and start a new thread).

Just wondering if a Palm HotSync cradle can be used with a passive cable logger (MMCD)?

I'm getting a hotsync cable eventually, but all I have right now is the cradle.. this morning when I tried it I was having communication problems (none basically).

Thanks

No problem, man... I feel like I am becoming more of an 'expert' about this, actually... LOL!

You certainly can! The cable I am using is a passive cable. All you need are connectors on the end of the cable to connect to pins 1, 10 and 12(see diagram):

On mine, the wire that connects to pin 1 on the diagnostic port is red. There is a black wire that goes to a connector for pin 10, then there is another wire coming out of the back of that connector that goes to another connector for pin 12. Sorry, I am not sure which pins these wires go to in the serial connector at the other end of the cable(..if you search here or google, I am sure you can find it).

Make sure that you have everything plugged in correctly. Let me know what you find out and post a couple pics if you want to make it easier for me to help you!

Of course it can as long as it's a serial cradle. A serial hotsync cable is just a stripped down cradle originally intended for hotsyncing your PDA when traveling.

There is a way to make the wire not disable the abs. I don't know anything about wiring, so I can't tell you how it works, I just got mine off ebay.

It is actually quite easy. All you need is about 2 1/2 to 3 feet of connecting wire, a toggle switch that has 2 leads on it(3 is ok too, you just need 2), and some female to female crimp-down connectors.

You have to locate which wire coming from the back of the diagnostic port goes to pin 10 in the port. In my case, it was a very light pink wire... actually, it was nearly white. Just cut that wire-it is the one that goes to the ABS control unit(dont cut it too short because you have to put the connectors on there), strip about 1/4 inch of each cut end and crimp a connector on each lead.

You will then need to solder the wires to your switch. If you end up with a 3 prong switch, leads 1 and 2 are what you are looking for(they should be labeledon the back). Continuity runs between these two leads- pin 3 is for ground. Determine where you want to locate the switch in the car and make the proper arrangements for locating the switch. Then, all you have to do is run the wires from the switch to the connectors from the wires at the diagnostic port. It doesnt matter which wire you attach to which connector.

To test, turn the car on with the switch at 'on'. ABS light should stay on when car is started. After car is started, turn switch to 'off'. ABS light should flicker and disappear. If you turn the switch back to 'on', ABS light will remain off and datalogger will work correctly. Just start your car each time with the switch set to 'off' and just switch to 'on' when you are ready to log. This way, you can run your data cable thru the dash and not have to plug it in after starting the car each time.

If there is enough demand, I will make a very thorough tech article with pics. There are a couple out there right now, as well. They just dont cover it completely in depth.

I just thought of this when reading through this thread. Maybe you could wire the switch through the parking brake switch, so after you start your car and put the parking brake down, the switch is activated. This would be a lot more convienient especially if you always park with the e-brake up. Just an idea.

I was actually thinking about setting something up on a circuit with a delay so you could just start the car and like 5 seconds later, it would switch over allowing continuity again.

This was the easiest/mst convenient option I was able to come up with.

Is there anyway to verify if whatever switch you wire up to allow the abs while datalogging is actually working and that the ABS is still enabled while datalogging...?

I want to do this mod soon since i just recently purchased a pocketlogger and my 92 tsi has ABS....I just want a way to check to make sure that i've wired the switch up correctly when i do this mod....
