I recently decided to park my 1972 El Camino on a semi-permanent basis because the gas is killing me. Lucky for me, I have a 1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo that I picked up roughly six months ago. I traded a 1990 Eclipse that had frame damage and what not because of a bad tow truck driver (Long story). Figuring that I had a non-running piece of crap, I traded for another non-running piece of crap in better condition. I am not all that familiar with DSM cars, although I had one before (I didn't work on it, most of the mods were done before I bought it). The reason the guy traded it to me was because he wanted to fix it, so I took his completely stock car into my possession.
The ECU in the car I have is dead/fried. The previous owner said he was messing with the battery and he fried it that way. Not sure how, I'm no car expert. I ordered one from Motoguy's Garage on Ebay today and I'm waiting for it now. Anyways, has this happened before to anyone, or would anyone have a clue as to why this happened and how do I avoid it happening to me?
The next question pertains to the fact that the car has been sitting for about a year in total (Since I've owned it and the previous owner had issues with it). I need to know what I need to do to make sure the car will be ready for long commutes to Los Angeles every other day. Maybe someone can include a checklist of everything I need and what I should check and make sure is working properly. I wanna go beyond a tune-up and make sure it's going to be running more than just well, aside from rebuilding the engine...Is it a smart idea to get into the engine and clean everything up? Like all the possible gunk buildup and what not? I read here a while ago that I need a particular kind of spark plug and some other things, I need to know particulars on everything I need to do and purchase. I just wanna be smart about getting this car going. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
