99 GS-T vs. SRT-4

I have a 99 Gs-t w/ a couple of mods wich are (apexi down pipe, thermal catback, greddy-s BOV, Injen intake, msd wires, ngk plugs, b&m shifter, ACT 2600 w/ xtreme pressure plate & hks turbo timer) I am running with stock tires. I have never timed my 1/4 mile. The new neon runs the 1/4 mile in 14.2. Do tyou think I can take it

I chose my car because it was cheap, but needed work. The work would allow me to learn some things about cars that I never knew in the past. I've heard a great deal about the problems that plague most Neons, so I'd be a little hesitant if I was to look at the SRT-4.

But you have to admit, Neon or not, it's a great price for the amount of power it comes out of the factory with.

And what's with all the Neon hating? Seems like people around here have petty reasons to hate cars. I mean, you hate Hondas because they're typically more ricey than China. You hated Neons because they break down a lot. Yet this car is different and you're hating it without knowing anything about its workmanship.

But I do have to agree that the SRT-4 isn't the prettiest car I've ever seen. I've never liked the round headlight design of the Neon and I won't like it just because the car it's on goes faster .

Agreed! The factory rates it at 215 crank hp, and every car mag that I have seen has dynoed it at 223 to 224 whp, which comes out to about 260 hp at the crank if you factor in a 17% drivetrain loss for a fwd, so yeah I would definitely say that it is very underrated from the factory. I'm just glad I don't have any problems with them as of yet. If I do, off goes the ported FP Big28, and in comes the FP Green.

First of all, I love dsms. I think the srt-4s are a great deal out of the dealer for less than 20gs. The mistake I see most people are making is stating the problems neons had before. This is a completely different car. It is not the neon of a couple of years ago by far. I say give it a chance. So far so good. Like it or not, they are stiff competition for alot of cars out there.
If you were to add the same size turbo and a FMIC to a dsm...different story!!

YES YES YES, you can beat the srt-4.

I ran 14.169 on pretty much the same set-up as you on the hotest day of the year.

also remember that not all srt-4 drivers are as skilled as the test drivers from Dodge. Also, this was their BEST time and may have been a fluke. Wait for this year at the track and i am sure that there will be one there running 14.5 at best(stock).

There was a man - who had a car - and Neon was its name-o! SRT-4's are great, but as of right now you can still purchase a first or second gen turbo DSM for about a third of the cost and invest just $1000 or less and make the Neon your bit(h...yeah, consistently too. Smack em right in their "bug" eyes.

I like the SRT4's, they are another example of a car that is bringing life back to the turbo car scene. Think back to the year 2000, turbo cars were rare and expensive.

As for reliability... I read an article in Sport Compact Car [I think] where they tore apart an SRT4 engine and were rather impressed with the build quality.

This year the SRT4 receieved a lot of upgrades, bigger injectors, LSD, and a better ECU. This is why the 2004 SRTs, the injectors and ECU upgrades explain the new 230hp crank numbers (and the fact that it was way underrated before).

While it may not be the most beautiful car on the road, I still dont think they look bad and when you take the hp/$$ ratio its all good.

Cost to horsepower it cannot be beat. But personally id rather buy a 2003 WRX with 30kmiles on it for 20 grand. It would be much nicer and also faster than the SRT4. And I wouldnt have to carry around the dreaded "neon" name

It's a NEON, so WHAT? I'd take it OVER ANY 1g old rusty 13 yr old car, or any 2g crankwalking, no power, POS. I bet it's buildquality puts our DSM's to shame. Plus its got that 7/70 warranty which simply kicks ass.

Another few key points, some of the factory albeit dealer options include LSD (!!!), and a bunch of intake/turbo/exhaust/ECU upgrades. All of which WILL NOT VOID your warranty. Seeing how this car is doing 102-103mph stock from a few guys, I don't think it'd be THAT hard to get them up to 110mph.

If I didn't have a car payment I'd buy one in a minute.

For the choad who was making fun of it's "2.4" making shitty power...there's alot of explanations.

1. Maybe you forgot to look at the torque.
2. Maybe you forgot about boost response.
3. Maybe you forgot about turbo size, stock turbo, and upgrade-ability for future turbos.
4. Maybe you forgot a larger displacement motor naturally has more ability to make power. There is NO replacement for displacement.
5. Maybe you forgot to do your homework, and see that the majority of BONE STOCK SRT4's are doing about 220whp, and 240ld/tq bone stock on dynojet's. Stock 2g's are doing at BEST 180whp. 40whp with way more torque, and less weight makes a much quicker car.
6. Maybe you forgot you can make larger than 2.4L from a I-4.

With basic mods, such as downpipe and exhaust, and 14psi, these cars have went low 13's already. Stock tires.

This 2.4 motor has went plenty fast already in a FWD by Forward Motion. So we know it has potential.

Give it to summer, and I bet they are going 12's on stock tires, with little mods.

by the way i freakin love my car! But I respect other cars, there's always something better.

and the srt-4 only has bov intake and wastegate actuator.

But regardless, I love DSMs have driven some, and Im getting one soon, but the srt-4 pound for pound is a better car.

Ok, lets compare apples to apples here. DSM's are an aging line of cars right? I dont know what you meant by "pound for pound" because weight is not so much as important as the amount of power these cars are putting out. What do you think will happen if you put your SRT-4 up against my DSM brother the EVO8? They are relatively close in cost...but the EVO would kick rocks into that Neon. The SRT-4 SHOULD be able to outperform a DSM from the 90's. Because if it can't, well then we'd all know it was a huge POS now wouldnt we? But can it beat out the DSM modern day brother the EVO8? Stock for stock? Nope!

IF anyone would buy the srt4. I understand to a point. Its i think the fastest new car out for under 20 grand. Which is pretty cool. Yet again its still a neon. Its got the frame , name and style like ive said before.

Theres actually alot of other things that alot of people forget.. besides the 1/4 mile times we are talking about... How about build quality, style, quality, sportyness. I personally think the DSM beats the SRT4 in all the categories.

Im saying that id rather own a DSM over the SRT4. Dsm is slower. But its an overall nicer car i think. Like said before its a dying car. Soon enough these cars all will have lots of miles on them and disapear. It kinda sucks.. o well.

All of you realy need to look past the 1/4 mile time of the neon and realize that , thats all it has. A good 1/4 mile time. Nothing else about it i like. Theres alot of cars out there id rather have, and are slower. New 3 series BMW , 91 Acura NSX, 2000 Celica GTS... List goes on.

Theres always a way to get low 1/4 mile times. Does it mean the car is nice.. no. Could easily get a 90 DSM junker with like 200k on it. make sure the engine is atleast in adecent condition. Throw a big 16g , frontmount , bigger injectors, intake/exhast and damn you are right there with the neon. Its really easy now a days to make a mid 13s car. But you sacrifice how nice the car really is. Speed doesnt declare value. Its how nice / stylish/ Brand name.

Maybe in your part of the world but in mine you can get one "brand new" for 24k right from Satan himself. My next used sportscar WILL be an EVO8.
