My friend cant decide between these three cars, i need some opinions on what he should get, like, what would be better in the long run, better response to mods, etc.

I've driven both generations of the MS3, and here's my summation:
I've always liked Mazda and Mazdaspeed interiors. They use decent quality materials and the fit and finish is nice. Beyond that I didn't really like the car.
The clutch bites extremely low down and is very snappy. Caught me out the first time I moved the car :/ The car rides smoothly but it's really stiff, and I generally prefer a stiffer ride. Going into boost was fairly disappointing, I was expecting a lot more. I know that the MS3 limits torque till third gear to combat torque steer and wheelspin. Totally retarded method of 'fixing' the problem, just castrate the car... Moving on. I did like the way it went through the gears, smooth, accurate shifting. Nice. What killed this car for me was how it behaved when you drove it like an animal. I'm guessing due to the clutch biting so low, fast shifting requires an altered driving style (for me at least). There's so much throttle hang from the DBW system it infuriates me. I'm used to cable throttle and it just doesn't cut it for me.
I'm someone that likes to drive my car hard on a consistent basis, and I didn't find gear banging an MS3 to be enjoyable at all. When driving around town doing gear pulls between lights is fun, but beyond that I can't tolerate it. Not everyone drives the same though...
The VR4's I've always had a soft spot for. Great platform to build from, great engine, very capable of making power. They do come with their problems though. The earlier ones are known for spun bearings and leaky t-cases. They are also more expensive to modify, and harder because of the decreased engine bay wiggle room. That killed it for me.
DSM's are a good compromise because there's nothing that platform can't do. It's easy to work on, parts are readily available at an affordable price, etc. DSM's are not in the same league as any modern hatchback like the MS3, and if you buddy is just looking for a car he can learn how to mod and just drive, then he probably would prefer the MS3.
