Hey guys, i got into my car the other night, and when i went to start it, it cranked over couple times, then stopped as if the clutch switch went out, then started cranking and fired up. later that night, i hopped in my car and nothing. The fuel pump does not turn on(hear no "humming") and the engine wont even turn over. When i do turn the key, i can hear something in the back hum while key is being turned. disconnected the clutch swith, does the same. Is there a switch, or relay that sends power to both pump, and engine at the same time when starting? I hear the click behind my radio when turning the key off, but am at a stumbled point? Help please :thumb:

there is a relay in the fuse box under the hood for the engine, you may want to replace that and see if that helps, and also some of the second generation dsm cars have a problem with the wiring going to the fuel pump. you may also want to check and see if your getting fire to the fuel pump, but check this before the relay and if you get fire before the relay and no fire after then you need a relay

The fuel pump in a 2g will only operates when cranking. It will not prime itself like many other cars do. There is a fuel pump test-plug on the firewall you can supply 12v to in order to establish if the fuel pump is functioning outside of cranking.

Hey Cox....i mentioned that when i do hit the key i hear what sounds like fuel pump kicking on, only for the duration im turning the key tho????

check battery voltage with a multimeter, should be close to or at 12 with the engine off. Locate the fuel pump test plug, and ground the connector to test it out.

Sounds like you have something small, keeping you from starting. Sounds like your pump is working though, they're pretty easy to hear when the engines not turning over. The pump is only supposed to be on when your holding the key so you're fine..

Okay so it's your first post and youve obviously read a cupple things but when you post you need to be clear and sure what you're talking about.

The way you said it, make's it sound like some random batch of 2G's have faulty wiring problems :ohdamn: not the case, all 2Gs have a voltage drop problem since the power wire isn't sufficient enough, the wiring works, but a bigger wire yields better performance. It's deffinatley a fix rather then an upgrade though.

Problem not solved. Drove to my friends house and when i got there and got out of the car i smelled what seemed to be a mix of oil and i think electrical. Borrowed friends truck for few days, went out to his house where it took a dump on me to rebuild my tranny, and it fired right up? So im guessing its between the starter relay and the starter??

I put three extra grounds on it. One from battery to chassis, two from engine to chassis. I got the tranny out, so im gunna check everything out that i can.

You did unplug the right clutch switch right? The higher one is for starting and the lower one is for cruise control. Make sure nothing is loose on your starter and your starter itself isn't loose. Did you try tapping the starter?

Ya i unpluged the clutch switch, no result. sometimes it would start, most times i didnt. took a rod and "beat" on the starter and that sometimes got it started. put a new starter relay, and junk yard starter. After putting the starter in, it fired right up 6 to 7 times, then back to not starting again. when turn the kew, you can here the gear in the starter pop out to hit the flywheel, but will not spin?!?!? All wires are tite as well as the starter. So im guessing in between somewhere between ignition and starter relay?

Do you have any exposed wire arcing off something? I was blowing relays when my coolant line melted a wire and was causing arc under my intake manifold.

Yeah that's the 1 thing about trying to look for but the ### they got the harness is routed kinda hard to see you what where it is

Sorry everyone i haven't gotten back sooner.......ok, first i replaced the starter relay, found a used one on ebay for $20. Started right up first few times, then had the same problems. Tapped on the starter and fired right up, so that told me it was the starter itself. But because of fundaage, i got a junkyard starter to put in there, and it fired right up the first 7 or 8 times, then nothing. Hit the key and the bendix wheel you can hear clicking, or moving forward but not rotate. Found a guy on craigslist that had a bunch of parts including a starter.......Been turning over since i put it in. So finally, problem resolved...it was the starter.
