no spark no fuel doesn't turn over

:banghead:OK so i just bought this 90' eagle talon tsi awd for 200 bucks from a uncle, the car has 134,000 miles on it. When i turn the key and depress the clutch the starter sounds like it normally should like it's working but when i look at the timing belt with the cover off it's not moving - not turning over? I checked for fuel by testing the fuel pump check behind the battery and no noise? pulled a plug and no spark? Some guy in town is supposed to come over with a mpi relay , CAS , and a ECU and were gonna try to see if it's any of those things. I would love to fix this myself (sense of pride thing) Iv'e checked the fuses, could it be as easy as the starter not engading ? Any help would be very appreciated . Thank you.
 
Im almost positive that the fuel pump will turn on electronicly when you turn the key to AC so if the fuel pump isnt even turning on thats not going to be a starter problem
 
I agree with highlandgst. Have a buddy sit in the back seat and put his ear to the seat and see if he can hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn the key to acc. But from what you are saying, if the timing belt isnt moving when someone is cranking the starter, then it sounds like the solenoid on the starter that engages the pinion isn't working/isn't plugged in. Start there. The starter is simple, it connects to the battery and uses a simple 12 volt signal to work as intended, no questions asked. If the starter is actually cranking the engine over then you have a 75% its a fuel problem and a 25% its a spark problem.

If the starter engages the flywheel but it doesn't start, double and triple check the fuel pump fuse and relay, these ECUs will not send spark if they get no response from the fuel pump. If they are both good then you are looking at a spark problem. If that's the case, check the signal from the wire that plugs into the coil pack using the service manual's check procedure. If you get no signal from that wire, your ecu is bad. If you get a signal from that wire, your coil pack is bad.

I'm a bit confused by your description. Are you saying the starter sounds like it engages the flywheel but doesn't turn the engine over? Or are you saying the starter sounds like it's freewheeling? Either way if the engine's not turning over, then there are no sensor readings for the ecu to decide to fire ignition or fuel injection. No reason to go condemning fuel and ignition components when the root problem hasn't been fixed yet. If the starter is engaging the flywheel and the engine does not crank, then you should be checking battery voltage while the car is sitting and while ignition is in the start position. You should be checking to see if you even have enough amperage to turn the engine over, and then moving on from there. You may or may not have ignition or fueling problems but, like I said, Based on what I read, I wouldn't be swapping out components unless I had the extra parts sitting right next to me.
 
Yea, if no pulleys are moving, spark plugs won't fire as they are triggered by the crank/cam sensors.

Try to see if you can rotate the engine by hand (clockwise!). If you can't, you got bigger problems.
