I bought a project this winter - 1997 Eclipse non turbo manual trans. The woman I bought it from (it was her son's car) said that it started running really rough, whatever that means... I winched it on my trailer and hauled it home. I got the car home, charged up the battery, it turns over well but no start. Here's the symptoms: No fuel or spark. I've sprayed starting fluid into the intake while cranking, no firing at all. No fuel pump sound. No spark at spark plugs. I've checked for power at the coil pack - no power. I've checked the crank sensor - no power to sensor. I've checked the cam sensor - no power to sensor. No check engine light - from what I've read this suggests the ECU is not getting power or is shot. The ECU is hidden under the dash behind the radio. I've seen questions on how to test the ECU and the responses have been to open it up and look for torched appearance or rotten egg smell. Before I tear into the console, is it possible the ECU is just not getting power? Everyone says check the fuses. I think I have checked them to be OK. Here's a question that I can't find an answer to: In my picture below there is a big gray electrical "box" right behind the fuse box and in front of the battery. There are two harnesses that connect to it with 40 pins each. For the life of me I can't find a diagram or reference to what this "box" is? I'd like to confirm at least that I have power going to the ECU before I spend money and buy a replacement. Also, I'm surprised that many of the pictures I see show the battery and fuse panel on the passenger side rather than the driver's side like mine. So I'm at the point that I think I either have a bad ECU or a fuse issue that is preventing power to the ECU, or there is something going on at this mystery "gray box". Newbie here, please help! Thanks.
