before removal of the timing belt, my car was making a loud ticking noise that increased with engine RPM and my car started overheating. i concluded it was the water pump, but upon removal of the timing belt, i noticed the oil pump sprocket does not turn very easily. im wondering...what could be the cause of that and how would it be fixed? has anyone else ever had this problem?

replaced the water pump, thermostat, and radiator cap. its still overheating and making that horrible noise. if the oil pump has failed, would that cause the car to overheat?what other possibilities could make the car overheat besides the usual? also, the balance shaft is not being used, i.e. has no belt connecting it to the crankshaft. also, the oil pump sprocket turns, but doesnt spin freely. but while the car is running, thats where the sound seemes to be coming from. while the car runs, the oil pressure looks to be fine on the stock gauge.

There is a second balance shaft that is run off of the back of the oil pump. Sounds like one of those bearings are bad.

i was advised it could possibly be the head gasket. i was told an exhaust port could have blown and be leaking into a coolant passage, and the ticking be from the exhaust leak. i am waiting on a compression tester to verify this... would the exhaust leak be that loud?

This would be the least of your problems with a failing oil pump. I would pull the front case off and inspect it and the balance shafts immediately. And while you're at it, do the balance shaft removal.

the fan does come on. the only belt that is on is the timing belt. as far as a rear BS, i dont know, i did not do the removal of the balance shaft belt. it was like this when i bought it, as was when my friend bought the car, whom i purchased it from

umm.... if the only belt that is on it is the timing belt, it's no wonder you're overheating! The water pump isn't turning!
