so i thought i would be a good friend and let a so called buddy borrow my DSM but he totally screwed me and the car. currently it doesnt run but before it broke down it was blowing massive amounts of oil out of the exhaust. pretty shitty for a rebuild with only 6k on it... any ideas? thanks

:barf:

Oil in the pipe's can be caused by several things outside of just a turbo.

Do a compression/leak down test to determine if there is any internal damage first, then if all checks out move onto the turbo.

Never let friends borrow your cars. I also learned the hard way, and lost one of my pride and joys to a careless friend who decided to learn how to drift.......

For sure, we all gotta learn the hard way sometimes. just make sure even if your turbo is shot (probably notice it first) make sure you go ahead and check the rest of the engine regardless and change your oil since its likely contaminated

yeah ill get the rest of it checked out.... give him the bill yeah right, hes a dirt bag and couldnt even pay to get it towed... so i had to go out at 11pm last night and get it towed only to find out that its been sitting in the same tow away zone for the last 3 days and before i got there to have it towed he had come buy and snatched all "his crap" out of it and left it unlocked...so i had to fit the bill for the tow and the new turbo/rebuild and whatever else is wrong with it. but atleast i got a paint job out of it... he painted it white... so i guess its not a total loss

He had the car because he was painting it for you? Sometimes you just gotta cut your loses and walk away from people like that.

well its along story, but he borrowed it for a little while until he got back on his feet, or came up with the money to buy it, but would rather paint it and what not rather then pay me.. and it broke down and he just left it in a random parking lot for a few days, so me and the misses got wind of it and went and got it... but the thing that bothers me the most is that he didnt have the balls to tell me it broke down or say i cant afford it or anything. and then he acts like he didnt do anything wrong... what a joke... so all ties have been cut with that clown. and life goes on.....

Could be the turbo...could be the valvestem seals. Depends upon the amount of smoke we're talking about here. Regardless...I don't believe improper driving would cause either to fail. Valvestem seals can go bad over time, especially with excessive heat or letting the car sit for many months without the motor being ran.

Either way...he deserves to have his @$$ beat for ditching the car like a crackhead.

Being that the car isn't running at all i would suspect something more serious than the turbo. A blown turbo will cause it to burn oil, but it will not cause the car to not run.

+1, blowing oil and then shutting down for good doesn't sound like a bad turbo to me. The engine should still run with a blown turbo, or even a seized one for that matter. I would do a compression test and leak down test to find out where the oil is coming from.

That is why any body that ask to drive MY car or MY bike, I just look at them and ask well can I fu** your girlfriend? Its kinda the same thing for me LOL.

I would seriously rethink my friendship with this guy. If not just whoop his ass, doctor bills are far more expensive than fixing
your car LOL.

Good luck man

LOL yeah.... the car runs but blows out all the oil very quickly. i can start it, but dont because i dont want to damage it more. had to put three quarts of oil in it to get it to register on the dip stick...

Update. Found out that it's not the turbo. Compression test checked out. But smokes really bad when you jump on it. They think it's one of the piston rings. Going to suck to have to tear apart an engine with only 6k on it and rebuild. Fml. Someone get me a beer

What a dumbass, I would be pissed.. There is a reason people like him don't have a nice car.

So true. I have nice cars because I don't break them the second I get my hands on them.

Good luck with the build man!

I'm tempted to just buy a Jdm engine and be done with it. By the time I pull the engine apart and change the rings and timing belt again. And head gasket again i am probably going to be close to the cost of a Jdm engine. Plus theres a chance I might get a Evo III 16g and bigger injectors. Atleast there's a positive side to this......

JDM Engine? Do you have a link? You could buy an assembled short block, there are plenty from here in the US that are just fine. But the cost of re-ringing the pistons and changing the head gasket doesn't even come close to the cost of a well built short block.

its pretty bad when you try to help someone out, and they end up taking advantage of you, or in this sistuation me and the car. drove the piss out of it, didnt check the oil, and just left it for me to come get and acts like all is well. i have zero tolerance for that shit now that it has happened to me. so now im faced with a really tough choice, to part the car out, sell it as a whole or fix it and hang on to it......

WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF

Smack the so-called friend in the head :banghead:

I have friends that just want to drive my car. I tell them no and they say it's just a car. I hate that, alot of us have a "connection" to our cars.

I suggest fixing the car and keeping it. It is weird to get that much oil in the exhaust if turbo and compression are good :hmm: I had that oil problem in my 92 TsiAWD, the turbo was the culprit.
Wish ya the best in your rebuild :thumb:
