So I had some shift cables in there that broke. As far as I can tell, they were 90 cables (going by the fact that there were adjustment nuts on both cables). I got a used set from Miller Import Parts and when I went to put them in, when they are seated in the right spot, the cable that sticks out was too long. I told Steve and he sent me another set. Same exact problem. What could be causing this? They are the best condition used shifter cables I've seen. They both have the adjustment nuts on both cables and laying them next to each other they seem to be the same length as well. I'll throw some pics up tomorrow to get a better idea of what's going on.

Chump, do you need pictures from another car? I have a virgin 90 gsx parts car still all together for references if you need something plus my featured car is all 90 also.

I'm not sure what I need. I'm not even sure what's going on. I'm putting 90 cables in a 90 that previously had 90 cables. I don't understand what the issue could be. Is there anything that can be overlooked when putting the cables in; it seems pretty straightforward. :idontknow: Were there 2 types of cables for the 90 year?

Only one type that I know of...they are all the same on all three of my 90's.

I imagine you've tried adjusting them to a usable length? May want to check the serial number on your trans to confirm you did actually have a 90 trans. lots of part swapping in dsm community.

I'm a little freaked out right now. I'm not sure what I did but it seems to be the right length now? What do you guys think? Here are pictures of the shifter from 1st-5th + R. Looks like the cables might reach after all. The trans is not installed but the bracket where it is secured under the dash is hunked down tight and they are in the bracket where those two 3/4-of-a-square shaped clips slide in. My trans does not have the VIN on it anymore, its smoothed off since I got it.

Wait a min....were traing to diagnose this with no trans in the car? You can move the cables anywhere you want if they are not hooked up. This is a pointless discussion. Put the ends on the cables, attach them, install the trans and then get back to us.

Before that last post, the trans was in the car. I'll be putting it in as soon as I get my flywheel lightened and I'll get back to you guys to see if the problem is still there. That was a big duh on my part I just realized how that'd affect everything too. But the trans was in when I started the thread

UPDATE:
With the trans IN and brackets all secured here are the 3rd, N, and 4th positions of everything:

look at the cables in the inside. where it is attached to shifter base if the tube looking black plastic that covers the shift cables are the same legnth. then they are 90 cables. the front to back cable for the 91 and newer has a longer plastic which would then be wrong to use on 90. i made a write up about using a old 91+ cables to fix the 90 cables. just it take out the side to side cable(youll have to cut the rubber off of the cable) on the 91+ and use it on the front to back movement on the 90 and cables.

THANK YOU! I laid the cables next to each other and they weren't quite the same length and the place where they seat into the brackets is different. I also noticed that that rubber sleeve and cap is a different length but didn't know what this meant. What was tripping me up was that there were adjustments on BOTH sides of the cables. I thought ONLY 90 cables had this? You have a link to your write up by chance? Sounds like I'm going through what you did. Here is what I'm seeing. The ones on the left are the ones that came in the car (same length sleeve). The ones on the right are what are replacing them(one longer sleeve).
