All 6 bolt vs. 7 bolt threads are merged here.
How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

You mean not turbo right. There are a few that have 1.8L motors. Most 1gs have the 4G63 motor, some are turbo and all the other ones that aren't those two are the 1.8L motors.

Yeah but you said all 1ga and 1gb cars came with the 4g63, turbo or non-turbo.

I knew the 1gas had 6bolts for N/T but I've only seen N/T 1gbs with that 1.8L.

Sorry to clutter your thread and go offtopic OP. Just trying to figure out what's what.

Yeah, thats why I added it to the other post. I forgot about that one. You only saw 1.8l 6 bolt 1gbs? What makes you think that they were all 1.8l motors? I have not yet run across any 1.8l dsm's yet. I also don't remember the engine code for the 1.8l motors, it may be the 4G61 but, I can't say that for certain. but, I have seen the 4G61 motors in person. They do look similar the the 4G63.

That's what I'm talking about. I see way more DSMs at the junkyard with that motor rather then a 6bolt. :(:(:(

So, that is the 1.8L motor. I've been to many junk yards and can honestly say that I have never seen one before. I guess there aren't that many 1.8L Dsm's in southern california. :D

I know that there is no way I could mistake that for a 4G63. Thanks for the picture. :thumb:

That is the 4G37 SOHC 1.8L engine, I had that on my 92 Eclipse.

So, the 4G61 is a 1.6l motor from the mirage right? I have heard before that someone accidentally installed the 4G61 motor into their eclipse. It turned out someone confused the last digit in the engine code and the guy had a 1.6l turbo engine. ROFL

Is this all, or can you think of more?

Also, don't forget the oil pick-up that I mention. I promise you need more than a flywheel, you sound skeptical? I have a did a 6 bolt swap so I know what it entails.

If you are reusing the head then most of your 7bolt stuff will fit great.

All 1gs have the same head whether they are a 6 or 7 bolt, so the head is irrelevant.

Alright guys, I have a 94 Talon i just bought and the owner says he swaped a 6 bolt in it; is there anything i can look at besides the oil pan that will tell me if i have a 6-bolt or a 7bolt motor...i did a search and all i found was the oil pan hump check

Go to http://www.dsm.org/ and also http://www.vfaq.com/ do some reading

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/early-late-engine.html tons of info here. Its better to search for info before you post. No worries we all get lazy sometimes. Good luck

The 3rd link you provided went to vfaq on how to tell via the oil pan, and he said in the original post "is there anything I can look at besides the oil pan that will tell me if I have a 6-bolt or a 7bolt motor...".

To the OP: The oil pan, or counting the bolt's on the fly are the really the only way to tell the difference. Its not difficult at all to swap a 1G 7-bolt motor out for a 6-bolt motor, there is nothing that really need's changing...just plug everything back in, and be happy :)

ok i didnt know if there were different casting number on the block or something like that.....ill just have to get under it and check it out

Ok guys, I finally got a chance to check the oilpan out; it sticks out in the center above the crank pulley.....so it is a 6bolt right

so the 7 bolts where so bad for crank walk? i have a six bolt and noticed that its was hard for me to shift when i took the tranny out i noticed the crank was moving .089 when the service limit is .012 what is up with that? thought they weren't bad for that?

Even though 7 bolts are more known to have crankwalk it can still happen with a 6 bolt. My friend also had the same problem in his 91 awd talon, it wouldn't go into 4th gear very easy, and when they were doing the head gasket you could move the crank pulley in and out.

it can happen to any motor that has thrust bearings. If that motor has a load or some other outside force that causes the thrust bearing to wear.

i was just wondering if instead of running a magnus harness or a RRE harnes couldn't you just use the 7 bolt cam in the 6 bolt head and use the 7 bolt cas? that way everything should remain stock including your sensors and wiring

You can use the cams. But you would be required to use the 6bolt CAS. It's not a mechanical issues it's a electronic/wiring issue.

so if i modified the metal plate the crank angle sensor adapts to it would plug into the stock wiring then if you changed the intake cam to the 7bolt and the 7bolt cam angle sensor everything should be koesher right?
