How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

This question has nothing to do with my motor but something thats been bugging me.
Kid in town just got a 99 GST and was saying that in 99 they fixed crank walk so it's the perfect DSM motor. Did the 4G63 motor in 99 fix the crank walk problem? If thats true why do so many people do the 6 bolt swap?

I've heard that somewhere too. No idea to as to the truth of it.

First off crankwalk is overated.

Between me and my friends we have had 8 2g gsx's and a few gst's and have never experienced crankwalk on any. It is truly over exaggerated.

The 99 has less reports of crankwalk and thats about it. There is no facts that mitsubishi fixed the problem just less people have gotten crankwalk on these motors. And yes its over exagerated. My mechanic believes he can build a more balanced 7 bolt stroker than a 6 bolt, dont ask me why.

Interesting
That answers my question.
Guess he was nether right nor wrong.

ive never known anyone whos had crank walk out of all my 2g friends but a lot of them put the 6 bolt just for a piece of mind and a feeling of insurance... But I mean there always is a lemon car, and personally I prefer 6 over 7 I just feel like there better engines and prefer long rod over short but my point is just a lot of 6 bolt 2gers do it just to do it not always because of crank walk. But no matter how overrated crankwalk is its still out there and its still big enough to be a statistic so I wouldnt want a 7bolt personally, just not a big fan for 7 . (swappin to 6 myself even though I have a 1g)

i know, it was actually the fault of the machine shop. My point was I've never personally seen any other crank related problems other than that one.

i did a search and i could find anything but is it possiable to put a 6bolt block on a 7 bolt head?

Nope. But you can put a 7 bolt head on a 6 bolt block :p

And yes you have to drill the 7 bolt head to fit the larger 6 bolt arp's.

does anyone know what has to be done in a 7 bolt to 6 bolt swap?? i got a 7 bolt 93 tsi awd talon and been lookin for a new motor.. i wanna go 6 bolt but i dont know whats involved like i got act2100 racing clutch but not sure if it will fit on a 6 bolt motor. or motor mounts, or will bolt to tranny?? anyone ever done one if so any advice appreciated.. just tryin to figure out what has to be done i have a 7 bolt block right now with a hole in the size of a golf ball..

Yeah i haven't really come across any guide on 1g 7bolts to 6bolt. I've heard its not as difficult. I figured i'd figure it out when i pull out my engine and drop the jdm in. hah.

Seems like no one is trying to help you , well im doing the swap myself right now, the flywheels are different on 6bolt, the oil cooler is a air oil cooler in the 90s motors, the transitor and coil pack have a different wiring set up in 90s but you can keep that from your 93 as I did, the ecu is different in the 90s and youd have to swap around some of the pins to make it work, but some of the ecu operations will still be iffy, more on that can be found in vfaq.com and the cam angle sensor plug in is different ( even though the same sensor but you could retain that from your old engine now if you didnt feel like swapping into 90s wiring harness supposing you got a 90s 6 bolt, but if you get a 91 or early yr 92 6bolt everything should be interchangeable except flywheel)
Other than that its pretty much the same engine and pretty straight forward.
But I recommend if you are to do this swap Id invest in a little money to restore the engine quality because remember
the 6 bolts came from 92 and older so they all pretty much have serious wear and tear and need attention to aged parts...
I rebuilded mines, ( bearings, 2g pistons, rings, crankshaft, lightwt flywheel, new head, valves, port n polish, water pump, tensioner, new belts, etc... ) Think it over
