How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

I did the swap. I used my 7 bolt intake manifold so the tps and cams sensor would plug right up. I used the 7 bolt clutch and everthing else. The only thing I used of the six bolt was the motor and oil cooler. Pretty much everything else will bolt and work.

Hey guys. BIG QUESTION! I kinda have the same problem, if you wanna call it a problem, my '93 Talon N/T is at the shop right now getting a new block. my original block was a 7bolt, i suffered from crankwalk or something. i got a 6bolt turbo block off a friend and put in a new racing crank and got piston rings all the new bearings and what not needed for restoration of the old '90 6bolt and to keep my head fresh. The BIG question i have is, what is my mechanic going to run into when putting the motor back together? ANY information at all could help me out, Private Message me or just reply here (kinda dont wanna interupt this guys forum). The nessasary oil to turbo outlets etc. will be taken care of by my mechanic, he's aware it's a differant block and whatnot, so he says he can handle that part. If someone can help me, I'd be greatful! Thanks ahead. :talon: :nono: VW :nono:

well the pistons on the turbo block are lower compression 7:8:1 to be exact, and your n/ts are 9:1 since its not turbo.... Your going to be way slower unless your considering bolting a turbo up on there, which I would recommend if you have the turbo bottom end, then your pretty much a turboed vehicle once you get turbo since ( youll have a turbo bottom end, and oil squirts and etc. )
Should go to the junkyard and pull all the stuff you need for a swap and look up info on doing the swap. ( In my opinion. )
( but are you keeping your n/t tranny? If you do go turbo and its a 5speed tranny it wont hold the turbos power levels for very long and youll eventually run into trouble with it, also the 6 bolt and 7 bolts have different flywheels, You may need to go purchase a 6bolt flywheel with that bottom end, Id recommend getting a lightwt performance flywheel while your at it.... )

Acctually yes, I was planning on putting the 2G T25 turbo setup once my talons back out. I dont quite understand your whole "will be slower" theory. but it's cool. As for the N/T trannys, their acctually proven to be just as strong as the 1G and 2G turbo tranys, plus the N/T's have a higher final gear. So I am not worried about that. As for the flywheel, we already ran into this problem and solved it (just a missing bult on the flywheel I believe-don't quote me on that, I only got told over the phone what they did to fix that problem and I havent yet been down to check up on the progress. But my motor in the first place I should tell you is fully built, I also have a lght.wght. FW and an act2100 clutch kit, with 6puck. and back to my T25 turbo setup, I have a 2G ready for me to rape at my buddys house. There Iam gunna get the 450cc injectors along with all intake/turbo/oil feed/7th wire for the harness etc. etc. etc. I have it all and it WILL be turboed when she comes back to me. Thanks for the help but I am still looking for more info about the piston situation...I just hope it acctually runs after reassembally, thats my biggest worry. Thanks hit me back.

well on lower compression on an n/t means its going to be slower because compression is a bigger factor in an n/t than in a turboed car, because your not adding boost... So a n/t needs high compression to be faster unless your adding nitrous, but since your going turbo just make sure you know whats required to do the swap, and the n/t tranny i contemplated using my nt tranny also but concluded that it wont hold up to a upgraded turbo dsms power and will be destroyed in short order, but I hear different stories on that some say there the same tranny, but who knows, i just know i dont want to risk it especially after hearing from someone with experience who used it and destroyed it... But yes the n/t tranny has better gear ratio for say quater mile times, but isnt geared as high as the gst tranny as far as highway top end.... But good luck with your swap, and one day your probably going to want to ditch your t25...

I have a 1993 Talon with a 7 bolt motor... and i need a new motor, or to rebuild my old one.. if i get a motor and awd trans from a 6 bolt car, will everything go in the same? will i need to modify anything? THANKS...

I can't figure out how to link pages from the VFAQ, but if you go to www.vfaq.com, then

Scroll down to "2G using 1G parts"
Has anybody ever installed a 1G engine in a 2G?

Then you should be at the VFAQ for it.

will a 7 bolt motor from a 95 gst fit????

No. There are no provisions for the engine mounts on the block. The 2g has the mounting locations on the tranny instead of the block.

As far as installing a 6 bolt into a 92.5-94, it is a direct drop in. All 1g engines are identical, except for the block internals. As far as mounting points, accessory mounts, and heads, nothing changed untill 95. In order to do a 6 bolt swap, the only other item you will need is a 6 bolt flywheel.

7 bolt had i think 122000 or some where around there.. should i definetally go with a 6 bolt, cause i found a 7 bolt with 87,000 miles on it for $300 on here the head was taken off, said it was good... and i can't afford the 1200 for a 6 bolt. so is the head for mine the one with bigger valves and stuff since it is still a 1g, i am confused on that...

1g heads are all the same, 6 bolt and 7 bolt. They werent changed untill 95. And all years had the same valve size.

Incorrect, the heads from the 7 bolt 1gs have better cooling passages. Other than that, they are the same.

Yes it will, but i do believe that the 6 bolt 5 speed cams are better than the 7bolt cams to start with. So there is no point in doing that.

Correct, the clutch is the same for all 4G63 motors (except evo 4's and up I believe, don't quote me). The clutches are different for 6 and 7 bolts because that is why they are named so... the number of bolts used to attach the crank to the flywheel. The flywheel also differs from FWD to AWD.

A buddy of mine is giving me a 7bolt that he has had laying around. It needs to be completely rebuilt. Should i use that one, or buy a 6 bolt to re-do?

I havent heard much about the 7bolts, ive researched the 6 bolts more... and they sound like they way most people go. Any links or quick tips on which one to do? Either way i would like to completely re-do it.
