All 6 bolt vs. 7 bolt threads are merged here.
How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

yea but everything you said that the 2nd gen has better can easily be swapped over to the 1st gen, and the maf can easily be hacked on the 1st gen that will net basically the same results as putting a 2 gen mass, and also id rather have 1st gen pistons because they are more durable under boost and can handle more total boost than 2nd gen, and boost gives more power than that little compression gain, and also a 1st gen is lighter and its harder to find eprom in 2nd gen unless your buying a 95 or 96 yr so when it comes to performance i think first gen is better, and everytin i see a first gen race a 2nd gen at the track i never seen the 1st gen loose to a second gen except once because the 2nd was highly modified. to me 2nd gen just has more options and better styling. but styling is all a matter of opinion . * not to diss 2nd gen because our cars are all family and i have love for them too , but just my two since on the comparison.

1. Hacking a 1G mas is only delaying the inevitable. You won't hit fuel cut as easily as an unhacked mas, but you'll still it hit a lot sooner than you would if you swapped over to a 2G MAS. On top of that, you still have the intake restriction to deal with if you stick with a 1G MAS, even a hacked one.

2. Finding an eprom ecu for a 2G is necessary only if you plan on installing a Keydiver chip, or going with DSMLink. If you're not planning on going with those, that shouldn't hold you back. Besides, it's not like those are the only two options available when it comes to ecu upgrades. You can go with AEM, Haltech, MegaSquirt, etc. You can also go pretty far with just a SAFC, MAFTPro, or VPC.

3. When it comes to racing, it all depends on how the cars are set up. If you check the NYCCDSM page, you'll find that club's top ten includes 6 2G's, 3 1G's, and a GVR-4. You have too many different setups to declare with any credibilty which generation of DSM is faster.

4. 2G pistons are just as durable under boost as 1G pistons. If they weren't, dropping them into a six bolt wouldn't be a popular option. FWIW this man has gone 11.9 @ 116 in his GVR-4 that was fitted with 2G pistons, on a SCM-61 turbo pushing 25 pounds of boost. If 2G pistons weren't strong, he would've thrown one through the hood when he made that run.

yea there both powerful cars i just wanted to back up 1st gen a little. but nah i would rather just put a 2nd gen mass on the 1st gen instead of hacking it. But really both cars have interchangeable (engine)parts between the two except for ecu and wiring i think. and i guess 2nd gen pistons would be better if your not trying to boost crazy, but if your looking for a lot of boost i still think first gens would be safer ( basically 20psi and up ) not to say that a 2nd gen couldnt handle a lot of boost or any thing/. but bottom line "dsm " no matter what form they come in.

What is the amount of pressure proven these MMLS head-gaskets can hold?

Alex
I run just over 30 psi on race gas and haven't popped it yet, or had any probs. Anything higher and I'd suggest O-ringing the head or block.

To answer your question though, people run 40+psi on them properly maintained.

LOL, cometic are junk...

go with MLS
I have two cars with cometic with no problems. Not tring to say anything but it could be the installer. I have made 599 hp on 27psi no nos. Now we have turned it up and used nos and had no problems with the head gasket.

The Cometic HG and Mitsu. MLS HG are both a great choice, either one will do just fine. Also the HKS HG for DSM is just as good as the Cometic HG and Mitsu. MLS HG, but a lot more expensive.

Be sure to install some ARP Studs while you have the head off.

2G DSM have 7 Bolt 4G63's

Hey all,

Just burned up a clutch in my AWD 2G (it's been a sad day :( ). A friend of mine has a stock clutch from his FWD first gen that he is willing to let me use until I can get a new performance one... so I ask: Will a clutch from a FWD 6-Bolt 1G fit into an AWD 7-Bolt 2G?

Thanks!

Yes, the clutches will fit in both. What will not fit is the flywheel. Those are not interchangable.

Hi guys im thinking of building a 6bolt motor to put in my car while my 7bolt is still up and running that way i can convert later... my question is if i get a 6bolt block will i be able to use my 7bolt 5speed tranny? i would like to keep my tranny since its built and fairly new.. thanks!
