How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

Gee, I say basically the same thing as him, and get dismissed...wonderful place, this.

I hope your not talking about my comment. If you are its nto his comment that enabled me to decide but everyones comments

Do I have a 6 or 7 bolt engine in my car? It was built in April of 92... or is there other way to tell besides pulling the tranny and clucth?
Thanks

correction GreddyGST 1g 90-92.5 had 6 Bolts 92.5 and up had 7 bolt motors. DarkStar you have a 6 bolt motor and the main way to tell is the number of bolts that your Flywheel has on it besides the year of your car. I learned of this on dsmstyle forums.

1st gen DSM have 6bolts.
You have a 6bolt motor.

Not so fast, April/May 1992 was the changeover according to the VFAQ. I'd check the oil pan especially in this case.

Here is a quick quote and the link:

How to quickly tell a 6bolt and 7bolt engine apart

Those people who are unlucky enough to own a DSM built around April/May of 92 often have no idea what parts to order for their cars, as DSMs changed from 6bolt to 7bolt flywheels at that time, along with many other changes.

My car has been a pain ever since I owned it. Of course i was expecting this when i bought it since i have owned 2 DSM"S before this one.

History of my 99 GSX

I bought the car with 120000 miles on it. First thing i was going to do what get the timing belt changed regardless of what the owner told me. (he said it was changed at 100k.

Well before i got a chance to get it changed, 2 months after i bought the car the timing belt snapped. Bent all valves and put a hole in a piston and destroyed my head.

I bought a used engine from another 99 which i got a decent deal on. It was a real clean engine with low miles.

4 months after buying that engine i had a valve just drop. No idea how it happened. It dropped from the head and hit the piston and speared the head with the valve stem. So i had the piston replaced and a 6 bolt head put onto my 7 bolt (found a cheap used one).

Car ran fine for about 6 months and now I am having electrical issues. Thinks its my CAS or ECU. Still haven't narrowed it down.

I have a 6 bolt engine out of a galant VR4 that is in my 1992 eagle talon that has a bad transmission. The engine runs fine except for a bad o2 sensor.

Who thinks i should scrap my nothing but trouble 7 bolt and yank the 6 bolt from my talon and put that in my 99 eclipse? Am i going to have nothing but trouble with my 7 bolt? The 6 bolt seems to be a strong motor.. i think it's the japanese version since it has the factory red valve cover.

All VR4s have the red valve covers...sure if your giong to rebuild the motor and you alreay have the 6bolt head and im...ide go with a six bolt, sorry to here you have so much trouble with your cars, not the best of luck

Only because you are having so many problems with your 7, I'd put the 6 in. However, I'd fix your electrical issue first before putting in the 6 bolt.

I agree. Take car of those electrical problems and then look into buying a nice, clean low mile 6 bolt. Might want to consider a JDM 6 bolt... its the easiest way to find a 6 bolt with low miles.

Yeah, that's where i got my 6 bolt that's in my talon. I've only put 2k miles on it since it's been in the talon. It was taken from a vr-4 front clip (right hand drive) transmission too. I failed to think of the fact that it was right drive it had to be JDM in my first post.

I guess i could just scrap the body of my 92 talon.. It's kinda in rough shape anyways. I do miss the 1 g cockpit though, i like it better than my 2g. Seems like it sits lower and shifter placment is better than my 2g

hello, I was wondering since I have a 1991 mitsu eclipse gsx that was manufactured in april I think, it might also be march.... I know you can look at the oil pan to see if it has a six bolt, but I have heard something like if it is 90-91 early part of 91 it came with a six bolt. can anyone confirm this please. could not find in search... thanks

i just wanted to know why some people make a big deal over the 6 bolt engine how much better is it then the 7? i have the 6 bolt 1st gen in my 91 laser rs 2.0

1. Seven-bolt engines (especially the 2G ones) have earned a reputation for eating up the thrust bearings, a condition known as crankwalk.

2. The connecting rods in the six-bolt engines are beefier, and can hold up a bit better than the seven bolts.

This doesn't mean that the 2G engine is a POS, were it not for the crankwalk issue, this would be the better engine. Consider the number of things that the 2G engine has that is seen as a performance upgrade:

1. MAS. The 1G MAS is restrictive and it's easy to trigger fuel cut with it. The 2G MAS is less restrictive, and will flow more air before it triggers fuel cut.

2. Pistons. 1G pistons have a 7.8:1 compression ratio. For 2G's, it's 8.5:1. This is the main reason why a 2G engine has a 15 hp gain stock for stock over the 1G, even though the 2G has a smaller turbocharger.

3. Manifolds, or at least the exhaust manifold. 1G manifolds are prone to cracking, creating exhaust leaks that slow down your turbo and sap away at your power. 2G manifolds are less prone to cracking.

The best option is to build an engine that has the best of both worlds. 1G block, crank, and rods with a 2G pistons.

There's plenty of information about these engines, start digging through this site for the answers you need.

Well said.

It pays to rebuild a 7 bolt is if has the revised split thrust design found in late 98 and all 99 models. This is much stronger and more reliable than previous flanged designs. When my 2.0 went south, I built the existing 7 bolt into a 2.3. When the thrust bearing was pulled by the machine shop it was still up to factory tolerance and showed zero wear after 69K miles. As a matter of fact, we re-used it, reassembled the motor and still couldn't get the crank to move with a crowbar wedged on it.

yea but everything you said that the 2nd gen has better can easily be swapped over to the 1st gen, and the maf can easily be hacked on the 1st gen that will net basically the same results as putting a 2 gen mass, and also id rather have 1st gen pistons because they are more durable under boost and can handle more total boost than 2nd gen, and boost gives more power than that little compression gain, and also a 1st gen is lighter and its harder to find eprom in 2nd gen unless your buying a 95 or 96 yr so when it comes to performance i think first gen is better, and i always c the 1st gen guys beating the 2nd gen guys at the track, at least here in tampa. unless the 2nd was highly modified. to me 2nd gen just has more options and better styling. but styling is all a matter of opinion . * id rather race in a 1st gen and pimp in a second LOL.not to diss 2nd gen because our cars are all family and i have love for them too , but just my two since on the comparison.
