Posting for a friend.
Car is a 92 TSi with a 6 bolt. Completely stock. My friend and I pulled his motor to solve a tranny issue. We lined the crank timing mark up and to our surprise, the cam gears were off.
Each cam appears to be 1 tooth advanced. We are replacing the timing belt and correcting the timing. Before we pursue anything, could there have been any damage done to the valves?
I bought a 1G TSi AWD a couple years ago. The previous owner said he purposely advanced the mechanical timing. I fixed it almost immediately. After I did this, the car ran terrible. Even with the ignition timing set correctly. I put it back how it was and the car ran great again.
I cannot recall exactly, but I am almost positive my car had each cam advanced 1 tooth. Nothing happened to my car internally (until about a year later I spun a rod bearing).
We were wondering if there was any chance that the valves or anything else could be messed up before putting the engine back together.
Also, this engine had an EXTREMELY loud lifter tick. Once the car warmed up, the noise would disappear.
OFF TOPIC:
While I am at it, my TSI AWD I spoke about above, I was going to rebuild that block. I had torn everything apart and went to install the crank bearings. It was a 1G 7 bolt. The thrust bearing would NOT fit in the center thrust bearing journal. BUT, it would fit in the journal closest to the flywheel. I know this is how the "thrust bearings" are on the Chevy 350's. That Talon of mine was a FREAK from the factory. If this doesn't blow your mind, I don't know what will.
