Im doing a bolt swap and im trying to put the timing belt on it and im having a problem getting it set. I've read the vfaq over and over again im stumped. Its stock 1 g head, it was timed right when I took the old one off I have a gates racing now. I just can't the cam gears to line up even after I torque the tensioner bolt

it helps to get everything tight on the intake side first then hold the exhaust cam in place with a wrench over the bolt that holds the cam gear on. The belt will probably stretch some when you torch everything down and set the tensioner. I find its helpful to set the exhaust side a tooth back before tensioning when im having problems getting the timing dead on and sometimes it works perfectly.

My method : Not including disassembly time and the 15 minute pause period, timing jobs for me usually take about 10 minutes tops. Overall total time, about 45, and that's because I work slow.

1 : Set cams in line with the head using 2 17MM wrenches. (line the timing marks up with the head surface. This is best done with the valve cover off and using a flat edge like a file.)

2 : Have a friend place timing belt over cams, tightly, and zip tie them to the cam gears. 3 ties on each.

3 : Remove wrenches - Cams should be in time and belt should be secure

4 : Move down to the crank, slide belt over the idler pulley, get everything lined up. (Remember to set the oil pump gear correctly if you still have balance shafts.)

5 : Once everything is in line, slip the belt over the tensioner pulley. Adjust tensioner.

6 : Rotate the assembly by hand at least 5 full rotations. Listen/feel for any hangups or impacts.

7 : Let it sit for 15 minutes.

8 : Rotate it again just to be safe.

9 : Make sure to replace all pulleys, bolts, and check torque specs. Inspect EVERYTHING.

10 : Start up, let it run, and if nothing detonates (which it certainly should not), enjoy!
