Please see video below.

1998 2.4 stroker. 2.4 block and 2.0 Head.
I have a EJ pulley on it to be able to use a 4g63 belt. The placement on the cam gears is odd.
I've changed it several times and moved it but it keeps going back!
I am about to put a new belt on though and I'm sure it'll do this again.
Just wondering if it's a time bomb waiting to slip off.
Ideas?

Can't speak for your setup specifically but my stock 98 rides to the edge of one side as well. Bone stock and then also with balance shafts removed and a different crank pulley and harmonic balancer pulley. Been fine for years. If it's been like that for a while its probably alright. Curious what others have to say though

Are you concerned its riding exactly at the edge of the cam gear? The tensioner arm is a suspect if you want to chase this.

Yes. You think I should replace this item?
I will be replacing the tensioner as well.
I will change them both over the next month or so and post on here again.

One of the possibilities, like this often happens when one or more timing component is off the timing belt alignment line.

Just in case, you should double check for below to prevent a worst case.

- Wrong or mismatched or loose tensioner pulley
- Bad or loose idler pulley
- Worn tensioner arm bushing
- Loose tensioner arm bolt
- Worn oil pump shaft/sleeve
- Loose oil pump sprocket nut
- Loose crank sprocket bolt
- Missing crank sprocket spacer.

Just wondering if it's a time bomb waiting to slip off.
In a worst case scenario, that may happen. Please refer to the link below and scroll down to post #15.
This may not be the same case but you can probably imagine that the timing belt would swing and slide much more at higher engine speed if the components/timing belt are not aligned straight.

Belt shouldn’t have that much walk to it, the oil pump sprocket should hold it more center on the cam gears and the timing plate behind the crank sprocket should also center the belt

I’d be concerned the oil pump sprocket isn’t tight enough, or that the pump has inward and outward play in it giving the belt that much movement

Would this be something that can be fixed with a new oil pump sprocket? Or a whole new pump?
I will look at it.
I do have an idler pulley from a Subaru WRX on the car to make the 4g63 belt fit. I'm just wondering if that could have a play causing the difference also. I'm not saying you are wrong.
Im just checking everything, getting new parts and redoing this system.
I will replace the suggested parts of issue to narrow this down.

Subaru pulley? Why? explain.

I used Gates Part #T41239 (half the size of a regular 4g63t idler pulley) and shaved the bolt down about .5mm to be able to use a 4g63 belt on a 2.4 stroker (2.4 block with 2.0 head). I needed to use a performance belt because the car has 400 lb of torque. It has worked as is with the belt sitting in that position for about 8 years. I installed the gates kevlar belt.

all these years, first I've heard of it.

Not only the oil pump sprocket. You should check for below as I mentioned above.
One or more of these would cause the timing belt slide/swing.

- Wrong or mismatched or loose tensioner pulley
- Bad or loose idler pulley
- Worn tensioner arm bushing
- Loose tensioner arm bolt
- Worn oil pump shaft/sleeve
- Loose oil pump sprocket nut
- Loose crank sprocket bolt
- Missing crank sprocket spacer.

Can you upload a pic of timing side?

The idler pulley is a Subaru WRX idler pulley. I set this up about 8 years ago.I will upload a picture soon of the timing side. I'm waiting on the parts to come in the mail to fix this. I'm ordering parts that you listed. I'll need them anyway in the future.

I came up with this several years ago when I put this engine together and found out I needed a smaller pulley. I can't remember who helped me find the part (Gates T41239). It is exactly half the size of the DSM idler pulley but .5mm shorter. I hope this size difference could be causing the odd orientation of the belt. I may need to put a spacer behind the pulley of .5mm. I will post pics within the next couple weeks when I get all of the parts ready. I'm not ruling out anything you all are helping me with. I REALLY appreciate the input from you all.

If it’s been like this for years then I’m not to concerned about it, I would just want to inspect the belt going around the crank and the oil pump sprocket. I’d also want to inspect how the belt goes around the pulleys to make sure alignment is proper.

If the belt has lasted years like this I’d probably just buy a clear upper timing belt cover just to visually inspect it when I pop the hood, and to make sure it never comes off some how. I’m not sure the timing cover would prevent it from coming off, in my head though you would hear it start to chew the upper timing cover if it was getting worse
