Well, hello there. First off let me inform you that I'm slowly getting my hands dirty in learning what there is to know about my first vehicle which WAS a 1.8 92 Eclipse... and is now sitting, lifeless, with the 4g63 secured comfortably in it's engine bay. I don't know a whole lot mechanic wise but am learning this piece by piece as I've fallen in love with these vehicles.

Let me break down my situation here and perhaps someone would be kind enough to help.

I originally found this car with the 1.8 in it. One of the mounting ears was broken off due to some idiot driving it without the lower motor mount. I quickly went off in search of a new motor as I knew that was bad. I stumbled across a perfectly good Automatic 92 Eclipse in which I snagged up and pulled the 4g from. This, sadly, was the NT version but I wasn't worried about that too much. What can I say? I got the 4g in my first vehicle, Turbo can come later. Hah.

Anyway.. I've ran into several little snags such as finding a new flywheel and clutch as the car that the 4g went into is a Manual ( I will not own an automatic. -.-; ). I had to locate a new caliper for the rear left wheel (Completely not on topic). And several other little things along that way that I've had to learn.

Now, people, I've been working on this since the beginning of the year and I think that I'm at the final stretch. Looking at the plugs and such, I figured that the 1.8 harness that is in MY car which NOW has the 2.0 in it will not work. I confirmed this through research. So here come my questions :

1 : Is there any way to modify the EXISTING 1.8 harness to function for the 2.0?
2 : How hard, exactly, is it to find a 2.0 N/T Harness for the 92 eclipse? I've looked several places but only come up with damned EVO harnesses.
3 : Looking at pictures and diagrams, I THINK that I could do the harness swap on my own. Am I mistaken?
4 : Does the computer(s) from the car that had the 2.0 in it need to be switched over to replace that/those which were in the 1.8 car?
5 : ... Where can I BUY a good Wiring harness?....And what's an average price? -_-; I'm afraid to hear the answer to this one.

Any info or any leads to start me off in the correct direction would be very appreciated. I'm coming down to finally getting this car done and as I said, It's the first car I've ever owned and I've put a lot of patience into it. I just want to see my baby running. ^^

Thanks a ton, ahead of time!

PS

Car that is having the 2.0 installed ( Black 92 Eclipse. Manual)
Car that was bought and had the 2.0 Ripped out of (Red 92 Eclipse. Automatic)

Yep, you need the 4G63 harness (complete with matching ECU) to make it work...

Hit some yards. You should find at least one out there.

good luck-DSM

That's really as detailed as it gets, find a N/T at a junk yard with the 2.0 4g in it and pull the harness/ecu. Make sure there are not cut connectors or frayed ends on the harness. It will save you some headaches.

Well... o_o So the EASIEST way to do this.. is to get the 2.0 N/T wiring harness... and then it's pretty much plug and play?

Sadly I've yet to find anyone with one for sale..-.-;. Any suggestions on where to look besides a Yard? The area I live in isn't too well know to have many of these vehicles...

EDIT :

My mistake on double post. Meant to Edit.

you can check ebay for a harness... i found a couple turbo ones on there... i ran my n/a talon with the turbo ecu and harness and dident have a problem.and doing the harness is pretty easy looking task... untill you have to pull out the dash and the a/c stuff. and the usuall price for the harness was like 200 bucks or something like that....

What's wrong with using the wiring harness from the vehicle you got the engine out of???

Well... Sadly it's hacked pretty badly at the firewall....Not sure if it can still be used or anything...

As for using a T Harness on a NT engine... it's proven to work correctly without the turbo? I got a great call earlier and had quite a bit of information shared with me... and that idea was suggested to me, so if it's something that will work correctly without leading to too many problems then that would be great.

The idea was, just to clarify, running a Turbo Harness and with a N/T Engine.. and have the Turbo ECU for backup in case it was ever turbo'd.

Confirm?

Also : The car that I pulled the 4g out of has the good working ECU in it.. but the car was an Automatic... Will that make a difference when I swap the ECU over?

OP said the engine came from the NT. Even a hacked up harness is better than nothing, especially when the rest of the harness is probably on your engine.

o_o... True... so it's something that SHOULD be salvaged OVER a new one?

How was the throttle response and timing? I thought the 1g NA cars had a better timing advance than a turbo 1g. Either way, thats good news for the OP since he was talking to me about buying my ecu and harness, which is a turbo setup.

BTW, the 1.8 trans should be a F5m22 trans where the turbos are 33.

Hey man here is a couple of threads that should help u with that swap from non-turbo 4G63 to turbo 4G63...http://www.angelfire.com/il2/freestyle/turboconversion.html
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-turbo-system-intercooler/48231-installing-turbo-4g63-into-nt-4g63.html
hopefully this helps man ...good luck.....:D:D

Only problem is that he has a 1.8L which is totally different than the 4g. Just keep in mind what i said, and it seems you should be fine man.

Appreciate the help there.

I haven't entirely decided what to do harness wise yet as I went and took a look at the Harness in the car that HAD the 4G in it originally.. and even though the wires are severed.. they aren't beyond repairing. I might just do that to save myself time and money at the moment, and shortly after, swap over to the turbo setup as I have plenty of time on my hands.

Now about that Tranny, You stated that there's a 1.8 and a turbo? So does the one that comes with the 1.8, act universal and go for the 2.0 as well, NT? Cause I took a look at the Tranny as well and took some pictures, and matched it up to online pictures of other setups with the 4G N/T and they look the exact same. o_o

I see. That explains it. The Tranny is interchangeable, however the m33 is obviously stronger. Gotchya.

Alright.. well looks like I've got everything to get my first car up and running. I can't elaborate the extent of appreciate I have for all of the help and it's quailed quite a few worries that I've had. I'm going to take a closer look and check out my options for Turbos and whatnot before I do this so I may have to grab that ECU and Harness from you.

Other than that.. I'm going to get to work on this immediately and see if I can get this done rather quickly so I can stop seeing my baby suffer. D:

Yea, the F5M22 had a higher final drive ratio (for both 1.8 and the 2.0NT - being used for both motors) than the Turbo F5M33, just that the "33" tranny had a heavier clutch to handle the torque coming from the motor..

That's valuable information you have there, kind sir. ;D

Have another small question to add. I am about to start on the harness project.. and I was wondering if any of the wiring involving the fuses need to be changed.. or if any of the fuse box's and whatnot need to be swapped. >_> Thanks.

Don't want to make a new thread to ask this... but..

Where can I get a Wiring Harness for this 4g? I was wrong about the Harness in the other car. It's shot to shit and the person lost most of the plugs.

>.< No luck at local salvage yards or e-bay

Man im doing the SAME thing your!! Got a 93 DL 1.8L swapin to a 6 bolt 4g64t!!! NOT the easiest swap!
First i didn't know that on a 90 6 bolts wire harness and ecu dont match up to the 93 dash so i have to swap the TB, TPS, ISC, CAS, Coil pack, and PowerTransistor to a 91-94 as well as the ECU and Wire harness, and cant find a harness ANYWAY!!! I know the trouble your going throw soo i give you props!!

Good luck on the swap!!
and if you hear of anyplace to get a harness other than some one parting one out p/m me!

Thanks,

shawn huetter

Ouch. Haha.. Luckily I'm dealing with a 92 so I don't have that many issues with the harness.. that I know of.

=/ I've found the ECU that I need, just can't find a nice harness that isn't hacked. There WAS one on E-Bay for $70.. PERFECT condition.. but time ran out before I could buy it.. =/

Ah well. if I can find a few, I'll give you a heads up so we can both get our wonderful machines running!
