Ok I parked my Talon in the garage for the winter. Its been in the garage for about two months now. (it got stored early after a fender bender) I've done some minor work to it but just body work. Now when I start it I hear the transmission/clutch something of that nature start grinding. When I press on the clutch the noise stops but starts again right after I let off it. What is the problem??? clutch? Transmission?

is it a stock clutch or aftermarket? it sounds like the clutch chatter ive heard many guys get with after market clutches, but if its stock im not sure.

its the stock clutch. I can't figure it out other then maybe just because i haven't run it in a while but I didn't think being cold would cause that. I might try taking it out and running it for a while to see if it stops but I'm afraid I might cause more damage if there is something seriously wrong.

I have that same problem with my dsm.I got it right after i replaced my clutch.just like you describe it.mine goes away after about 5-10 minutes of use,but its everyday. The mechanich at the shop i work at says it might be one of the main rod bearings inside the transmission.I'n notpulling that biach out till that bearing has fused it self to the metal and i can't go no more dough. :p

I talked to my girlfriends dad (a mechanic) and what he said was there might be water inside the transmission. (don't know how it would have gotten there though) He said to pull the plug on the bottom of the tranny and see if there is any ice blocking the hole or if any comes out. Going to check it out when I have a chance. Might be an easy fix cause it could be frozen since its about 20 degrees up here in Michigan

well Im in miami so I doubtthat that is the problem for me.It could be possible for you dough, why not sounds logical. In my country they gotta heat up the oil pans on the diesel trucks so they'll start. :p

I think I'm going to try warming it up first and see if the problem stops. Just run it for a few minutes till the engine gets warm. Right now I don't have a hood so I can't really run it down the street but I suppose a little ways down the dirt road can't hurt anything. Just to see if it'll quit.

Umm not a good idea to run your car if there is any water formed in your tranny.just drain it first,if there is any water it'l fall out before the oil since water is heavier then oil.

the rattling is your release bearing... it might of slipped of the return clip.. the noise is the bearing hitting the clutch.

so why does my noise go away about 5 min. after use?I'm not trying to prove you wrong or anything I'm just trying to find a solution to our problems.it's just that this noise baffles me but not enough to drop the tranny, and if I do I better be upgrading something like the flywheel or something.

So should I go out and get a new release bearing? or just fix the clip, or both. Car has alot of miles so I figure I should just replace the bearing while I'm in there. Anyone know how hard it is to pull the transmission on one of these?

dropping the tranny is easyer than you think.... and its deffinatly worth it... because if you let it go on its going to screw it up.... the noise will go away after you start driving it but just cause the noise went away doesnt mean the problem did... youll hear a rattling everytime you start the car right? and when you ingage the clutch the sound goes away. yet if you depress the clutch you hear it again. correct me if iam wrong. which would state it has to do with the engagement of the clutch.

Yeah thats my problem. I had so many plans for this car too. Unfortunately money that was supposed to be there has suddenly dissapeared. Long story. I'm going to fix the transmission. Paint her (I already have the paint) and find a cheap 1g GSX or TSI. So the transmission isn't that hard. How long do you think it would take someone with marginal experience to do the whole job? I have almost all christmas break to do her in and hopefully get all the other things I need before i get her painted.

thats like my dog hes sick but iam not going to take him to the vet till he dies. :thumbdown what ever man. if you would like to ask us what the problem is which means you have some what the intent to fix it yourself. if you didnt want to or thought it was a wast of your time then go to a shop and have them work on it......

ohh and to the original poster of the thred... its easy to drop the tranny its real easy once you do it you'll be amazed on how easy it is..... of course theres little things that suck and will get you frustrated as all hell...make sure the engine is upright and not tilting when you plan on pulling it.. theres bolts directly to the block about 4 i think then the starter(2) you got to pop the axels out of place to do so just pry them out, drain the fluid ...etc... theres probaly about 15-20 bolts/screws total for this job... but i would if its your first time ever take inventory of every bolt with where it came from get the r/r (replace/removal) book from pep boys and go at it.... once you do it your self you'll never forget. :thumb: and then you'll understand how things work.

Yeah I've got my dad to help me. He's pulled trannys before. Never on a talon though. But hopefully I'll get him to help me out. SHouldn't be too hard if its like you say though. THanks for all your help guys. 40 bucks sound like the right price for that throw-out bearing?

First of all a dog is a living being and there fore canot be compared to a the hunk of steel and aluminum that my tranny is.I wouldn't even nuter my dog,I mean would YOU nuter your best friend? :p
Second,if the problem is NOT the little clip and is internal to my transmission I could buy one from a junkyard for like a couple hundred bucks and drop it in there at my uncles shop for free. However since I am family and it it would be for free(he wont take moneyfrom me) I would probably get bumped to last place all the time and have mad downtime. If not I could have one of my friends rebuild it and could pay him for the rebiuld as I go along.Call me spoiled or fortunate but I have more mechanich friends/family on my phone book then anything else.I'm also working on cars six days a week so you can get the picture and Im gonna still be riddin till the wheels come off.I was just jumping on his forum to see if we weren't the only to dimwits with the same problem and it was some common problems on our cars that we didn't know about. You know certain cars are prone to certain problems and such.
