I was having difficulty getting into 2nd at anything over 5K rpm. I adjusted the shifter so that the cables lined up appropriately and got the slack out of the base. Now the shifter feels great, easy, tight! BUT!!! Now when I shift into 2nd and start into the gas the engine free-revs with no engagement....then if I wait a moment (with shifter still in 2nd) the trasmission engages (smoothly) and off I go. WTF?!!?!?!?!

I'm ready to pull the tranny and rebuild, but I'm wondering if it's just adjustment of the shifter. I've tried readjusting it with NO improvement and can't even get it back to how it worked originally (with just grinding over 5k rpm).

Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful!

It sounds to me like you are driving around your problem, if the gear does not grind at all before it engages smoothly. To me that says you are matching the rpms and hiding the problem that the 1-2 synchro is going out. Hence pausing a moment to shift into that gear.
