OK - I've searched around here and am finding conflicting information.

I've got a 4 prong relay, located under the radio, next to what I thought was the fuel pump relay. Pictures below (note - two of the clips that hold the plug to the relay broke off) Isn't that the starter relay? It's got the black/red wire from the steering wheel ignition going to it, as well as the black/yellow wire which runs to the starter solenoid.

This relay is dead. What is the part number?

I search for P/N MR224159, which has been posted in a few threads as the number for the starter relay. That isn't what I need after looking at images of it. I also searched for P/N MB398020, which shows up for multiple things, none of which say "starter".

Can someone clear this up for me once and for all? I need the P/N for the 4 pronged relay located under the radio with the black/red and black/yellow wires running to it.

Many, many thanks in advance. Once I get this figured out, I think I will once again have a running DSM.

I just checked my CAPS. Turbosax2 in post #6 has it correct. PNC 82799C is the starter relay which is PN MB398020 for your 95 M/T (MB543175 for 95 A/T). His attachment 111057 has the 2 PNC numbers incorrectly swapped (ie. 82799C should be relay on left) which has been the confusion for YEARS !!! ROFL

Awesome! Glad we got this sorted out.

Thread cliffnotes:

Starter Relay Part Numbers:
1995-1997 M/T: MB398020
1995-1997 A/T: MB543175
1998-1999: MR359905

Door Lock Relay Part Number:
MB543648

Starter Relay is located on the left under the radio, Door Lock Relay on the right.

/Thread.

(now watch me order MB543175 and it ends up being the Door Lock Relay...ROFL)
Thanks luv2rallye - I'm pretty sure that's what I need.

Side note - there are a lot of threads around here regarding the starter relay that have tons of other P/N's listed i.e. MR224159, MB398020, MB543648...seems like some serious misinformation is getting circulated.

I just now found a note that says the starter relay on the 95-96 has a different pinout and plug so it sounds like it may be different after all. Sorry I didn't see this earlier (I don't have diagrams for the 95-96).

I do see on my 99 that MR224159 is used for both FP and MFI relays, MB543648 for door lock power relay 1, MR359905 for starter relay, and not 100% sure but MB398020 is for cruise control relay on the NT (T doesn't have one).

The reason you get all different answers from people is because:
1) they list the relay next to the real one due to ignorance or,
2) they have a different generation dsm (1g vs 2g) which makes a huge difference or,
3) they have a different sub generation (eg. 2ga vs 2gb) which sometimes makes a difference or,
4) they have a non-turbo vs turbo (huge difference especially on 2g) or,
5) they have an auto vs manual (sometimes difference) or,
6) often the same relay is used for more than 1 application or,
7) they don't know what they are talking about or,
8) they are just guessing but trying to be helpful

These reasons are present with any forum so you must always consider the source. Sometimes looking at their model/year/engine/drivetrain helps.

P/N MR359905 is definitely the starter relay for a manual, but not for an A/T....

Could someone check CAPs for the P/N for the two relays located under the radio?

EDIT: I found where another member posted a picture of the location of these relays. The one I'm looking for is on the left, that's plugged in with the black/red and black/yellow wires coming out of it - this is the Starter relay, correct?

82737 - Door lock relay
82799C - Starter relay (I believe, not 100% sure - CAPS just calls it "Relay")

As for the discrepancies in the part numbers for the "relay":
1995-1997 M/T: MB398020
1995-1997 A/T: MB543175
1998-1999: MR359905

I think in this particular case 1) is the most likely. I've seen two threads now where the OP was advised that the starter relay was on the right. This is clearly not the case, as evidenced by the picture above and the picture attached.

I definitely think I've got it now. Going to order one up and cross my fingers it's the one I need and it works. Thanks turbosax2 and and luv2rallye.

Most pictures, even in my 99 factory Mitsu diagrams manual (real one from Mitsu), show those 2 relay positions swapped (by mistake). The starter relay is the one on the left with the black-red, black-yellow, and green-black wires. Your only question is which is the correct part # for your 95. You could just call a Mitsu dealer.

So just to be clear, 82737 on CAPS is the starter relay for a 95-97 A/T and the P/N is MB543175, correct? It has to be, even looking at that illustration, the socket looks exactly like what I need.

Hopefully others can use this thread in the future.

Right. And I've talked to a few Mitsu dealers....they're clueless. Big suprise there.

Where did you get that picture pix2314? It looks suspiciously like one I took of my 99.

I got it from this thread:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/294958-2g-starter-solenoid-wire-no-12-volts.html

+rep for both turbosax and luv2rallye btw...

No, 82737 is the correct PNC for the door lock relay, not the starter relay. As luv2rallye said, the relays are flipped by mistake in the picture. But the PNC's and part numbers I listed still match.

Yes, MB543175 is the correct part number for a 95-97 A/T starter relay. And for future searchers, those part numbers are correct for all 2g's, turbo and non-turbo models.

I just checked my CAPS. Turbosax2 in post #6 has it correct. PNC 82799C is the starter relay which is PN MB398020 for your 95 M/T (MB543175 for 95 A/T). Solution
If you have a M/T (doesn't work for A/T) and you don't care about the theft alarm disabling the starter or having to press the clutch pedal down to start the car, then you don't even need the starter relay.

Just remove the relay and jumper the black-red to the black-yellow. (This is because the relay is normally closed [black-red connects to black-yellow] and only activates [disconnects these] when either the theft alarm disables the starter or clutch pedal is not pressed).

Old thread, but since I have something useful to add in case anyone runs across this thread, the starter relay on my 99 GSX manual, build date Aug 98, uses starter part number MR359905 as stamped on the unit i just pulled.

Looking at it though it's your run of the mill 30-amp relay typically used in fuel pump re-wires. So rather that order the OEM for $20+, pick up a bosch 30 amp at a local parts store for less. You can tell because the pinout numbers and amp rating are printed next to the prongs just like other 30 amp relays, and the pinout pattern is identical.
