So I was just driving 5 minutes ago, car seemed normal. (2g 95 awd turbo, mostly stock, 1g bov and a different air intake). And I left from a light, driving casually, shifted to second, felt like something slipped. And the car shutdown, so I merged over and got off the road. It wouldn't start when I tried turnin it on. Any ideas?!

I'm just hopiing the timing didn't slip...
 
Idk how much this a response to the post above. But I was planning on replacing the water pump, and the belt system was squeaking. Both the belts were brand new though.

Also when I tried to restart it, it would try to crack but just wouldn't fully turn over

The water pump would have nothing to do with the car just randomly shutting off unless the engine overheated.. Did the engine crank when you tried to start it or did it just do nothing?

Just saw a thread on here where a guys car's belt squeaked and wouldn't start. Water pump siezed up and screwed the timing.

A water pump seizing would do absolutely nothing with timing. Thats why there is a timing cover. So unless guy wasnt running one and the pump sized and the belt flew off into the timing belt causing the belt to jump a couple teeth I do not EVER see this happening.
 
It could be your timing. I had mine jump when I was idling. Did about the same thing you described. Your best bet it to line the cam timing marks up, put the #1 piston at TDC, and see if the notch on the crank pully matches the "T" line on the lower cover.
 
I guess I will have to tow it back here and check timing. When I tried to start it, the car had power, the starter would turn but it wouldnt actually turn over. I probably could have got it started if I gave it gas but I feel like it would run rough.

Before I started driving i turned it over, belts were squeaking more than normal and the car was running cold start (1200rpms compared to 800-normal) let it warm for 2min and belts stopped maiking noise. Cold temps here in Chicago today

Wrong buddy. The water pump seized which wouldn't let the pulley turn which caused massive friction on the belt which caused the belt to get really hot which caused it to snap.

To the OP. Check the basics, ensure your timing belt is intact and go from there.
 
Right... Cause the WATER PUMP belt to snap.. Not the timing belt.. which is under a plastic cover!!

maybe it was a different engine this happened to. Somehow another his water pump seized and it took out his timing belt. It was on this site also. Whatever.

Dude is right. A seized water pump will throw off the serpentine/alternator belt. Not the timing belt.
 
Okay so it's pretty hard to check timing in the parking lot, unless I'm mistaken on that. I'm pretty sure you have to take the top of then engine apart, correct?

My father used to be a mechanic so he will be helping me out definitely!

I know the basics though. All three belts were still intact, and my timing belt does not have the upper cover on it. I have heard of timing jumping before, but I wasnt even driving aggressively!

I guess my new question is; Is there anyway that ge belts (not timing) could seize and the engine would still start up. Because the car turning off could be due to low idle in cold temps. But if I rule out the belts then it's a no start issue and I'll take that path
 
Check your terminals. My car turned off on my Uncle in the freeway. My old terminals were like burnt/melted So I changed them for what ever purpose and never turned off randomly again.

Thank god no one was hurt.
