2g tsi awd automatic transmission swap?

how hard is it to swap out a bad automatic transmission on a 95 tsi awd? i might be picking one up that has a bad trans and was wondering if it hard to swap out the old one and put a new one in

It kind of depends on your experience. What one might consider very easy another can get in way over their head. If you have a good transmission jack than they are real easy, if you don't than it can get pretty crazy. The awd auto's are very heavy and hard to maneuver around compared to the manual.

Its not really that hard with the right tools. Probably about a 3-5 hour job unless you don't have any experience changing a transmission, don't have any help, and don't have the tools.

i got the tools and my dad has alot of experience i just didnt know if it would be hard or not and didnt know if i would have to pull the motor and trans/tranfer case or if i could drop the trans from the bottom

It is way easier to drop it out the bottom. Remove the axles, drop the transfer case, unbolt the torque converter bolts, unhook linkage, plugs, and hoses, remove the front and rear mount brackets from the bellhousing, remove the mount on the end of the case, remove front to rear crossmember, remove bellhousing bolts, and drop it out. You will have to support the engine with a jack because there will only be 1 mount holding it in at this point.

so would it be easier to find someone who has done it before and pay them to do it or try to do it myself? i have never worked on a tsi awd only my 420a esi talon and i have no knowledge of 4g63s yet

Changing a transmission is pretty straight forward if you are mechanically inclined.

im pretty sure my dad and i could figure it out if not i got a buddy who has a few talons who could help out

I would get your buddy that knows his way around a dsm to help out if you can. But its pretty straight forward. Especially if you have tools. You can pretty easily drop it out the bottom.

It's alot easier than the engine for sure.
Take out the front axles, jack it up high, remove the crossmember, disconnect the torque converter from the flexplate, remove the trans to block bolts, then remove the mounts and take it out of the bottom with a jack. Not too bad really

Definitely not harder to swap, the process it pretty much the same for either. But they are heavier so unless you have a tranny jack, you'll need a bit more muscle.
