I'm just about to install a boost gauge so I took off the steering wheel covers and came across this.

What is this and why do i need it?
All I know about this is it's over 1/2 lbs. and is from the lower cover of the steering wheel.

Not really sure but I'm thinking they put those in to prevent rattling or something. They're only on the lower pieces, like the one you have there, the panel below the dash at your knees and there's one sandwiched inside the glovebox door. I've taken all mine out and didn't notice anymore rattling than I already had.:idontknow:

its a knee pad for when you get in to an accident. seriously tho is a crumple zone under the wheel for your knees

Crumple zone or not, those things are hard, and wouldn't want it hitting me, there's no padding to them at all. It's just a weight, maybe an insulator too (as mentioned) based on material. It adds weight to the column. Only the engineers of this car could say with 100% accuracy. I always take them out since the column is heavy enough without it. Won't hurt anything if you remove it.
