How it's supposed to go:
  • Top red to green. This is the oil cooler feed; it returns to the water pipe.
  • Lower red to front yellow. This is the turbo coolant return; it always returns to the water pipe.
What's missing:
  • Turbo coolant feed port to rear yellow. This, on a 2G comes from the block; on a 1G, it comes from the thermostat housing.
As stated, there simply isn't enough ports to plumb everything up as it came from the factory. This is a common issue when reusing the 2G thermostat housing / water pipe with a 2G head on a 1G block.

There is the option to not run coolant to the turbo, but then there is one excess port that would need to be blocked off.

I run a 1G housing on my 2g head/1g block setup.

Options are pretty straightforward.
  • Go complete 1G setup, as Marty mentions above (thermostat housing and water pipe)
  • Run no coolant to the turbo and plug the lower red line on the water pipe; this will use the upper red to feed the water cooler and light blue to return from the water cooler
  • Run no coolant to the oil cooler and plug the light blue at the water pipe; this will use the upper red to feed the turbo (to rear yellow) and the lower red to return coolant from the turbo (from front yellow)
  • Run coolant to everything and find another source for a feed or use a T at the oil cooler coolant feed
Completely up to you.

And by doing so, trying to accomplish what, exactly?

There is already an excess of return ports; the light blue line is a return port so putting a T there doesn't do anything to help. I guess I should have mentioned the oil cooler coolant feed is the upper red.

Sure. You may not reap the extent of whatever small amount of benefit you'd get out of having a dedicated feed, but it won't hurt anything.
