Ok so this is my first post on the forum. I'm fairly new to cars and always wanted a GSX. Last week bought 1997 GSX for $1000, 5 speed, it runs and drives but has some issues. i thought i needed a project to do.

here is a list of the mods the previous owner did: Ijen air intake, 14b turbo,2.5" turbo cat back,1G BOV, 550cc injectors

1)what should i do in turns of maintenance? oil change? fluid flushes?

2) I had my brother who is a little more inclined about cars take a look at it and all hoses from the sensors are cut off to the CEL. So all the hoses are cut and there is No CEL at start. But it starts. some kind of hack job? so even if there was something wrong with the engine i wouldn't know. So i need to fix this.

there are some other mechanical issues but i thought this would be a place to start so i can figure out whats wrong with it. my goals for this car is to become a 300hp dd and as of right now will not even pass inspection. I want to get this car to as clean (stock) as possible before attempting to mod it. Im looking for anything for advice and where to start. i took a pic of the engine bay to maybe help... can take more if needed.

Congrats, you got a good car for a decent price if its just hacked wiring/vacuum lines.

Rather than taking a picture of the engine bay as a whole, go over everything with a fine tooth comb and if it doesn't look right take a picture of it. I see hacked wiring all over the place but without knowing what the end of it looks like or where its going I can't be much help. You should really get a set of 450cc (stock) injectors if you want your car to run right, maybe someone will trade you for the 550's? You could keep them but you have no way of tuning the car, the car will never run right because it will be getting too much fuel. You also don't have a 1g bov, at least not installed, thats definitely the plastic 2g bov but at least its recirculated which is surprising.

Basically take more detailed pictures of the questionable stuff and post them, then we can help you a bit more. For maintenance you'll want to do a compression test, replace spark plugs, oil change, flush/replace coolant, and possibly consider changing the timing belt/components if you don't have receipts from the last time it was replaced.

:dsm:

^^ Like gofer said try and take a picture of everything that you seem to think is wrong and we can help you better from there.

If you want to trade those 550's I've got some good 450's for trade.

No Tuner device...wanted to start slow..i was thinking of getting stock injectors. thanks guys its a good place to start..theres just a lot of disconnected wires and hoses all over the place. So the CEL not starting when i turn the key isnt that much of an issue yet?

Tyeler18: i'll out the injectors and actually see if they are 550cc...who knows from the looks of it the previous owner could have been lying....i'll pm you and let you know about those 450's

The CEL doesn't illuminate for 5 seconds when you turn the key to on? The retard might have pulled the bulb from the gauge cluster...

:dsm:

is that the only way you can get the CEL to turn off...cause yeah it doesnt turn on at all.. i havent checked to see if it throwing codes...but should i get all the hack tubes and wires connect first?

I just got my GSX not long ago too. First thing I would do (I just had time to do it today) is to do the compression check. I just want to make sure that the engine hold up well and has a good compression :hellyeah:

I don't know what exactly numbers you need to look for. Maybe others can chimp in quickly.

Im going threw the same thing man I feel you.First thing I did was wires, plugs,IM gasket,Valve cover Gasket, timing belt new belt tensioner, just do everything you can as far as maintenance that way you know it has been done! All fluids changed.

The CEL illuminates (code or not) for 5 seconds when the key is turned to the "ON" position, this lets you know that the ECU is functioning or the 20A motor fuse isn't blown. If the car starts then the only thing it could be is the bulb not illuminating the CEL on the cluster, sucks to say it but some people are shady.

Picture 1/2/3 are all emissions vacuum lines, use this diagram and see whats all missing. To pass smog your going to have to re-run all of them, so a trip to the local auto parts store might be in order and about 10ft of 5/32" (3.96mm) vacuum hose later. You'll also need those plastic "T" connectors, etc. etc.

Picture 4 is a part of the A/C and you don't have any so that cable will remain disconnected. It also looks like a connector disconnected in your original post (picture #1) by the driverside strut tower, that too is the A/C harness to the compressor. The previous owner deleted the air conditioner so don't plan on rolling the windows up this summer...

Picture 5 is to the A/C radiator fan...

I just remembered, my buddy Brian made a great electrical connection I.D. write-up in our sites Tech Articles, here it is... ---> 2g Engine Bay Electrical Connection Identification

:dsm:

thanks gofer..i'll try to take the cluster apart to see why the CEL isnt lighting up..
well about the ac can you see whats missing from the pictures or no?

The previous owner, from what I can tell so far, looks like they did everything half-ass EXCEPT when they pulled the A/C because from what the pictures show its completely gone. I don't know what your intentions are but I can put a picture up showing you all the necessary parts you'll need if you want to put air conditioning back on the car?

There is a unit under the dash which is a part of the HVAC system that they probably didn't pull, you can tell if its still there by looking at the firewall of the car and look for this.

:ohdamn: great haha..yeah i was planning on putting it back. if you dont mind that list would help. im sure a lot of guys on the forum might have parts laying around so it'd be cheaper?

I edited the above post too, showing a picture of where the A/C unit under the dash connects through the firewall. I'm 99% sure you'd still got that piece as its a PITA to remove and you lose the heater after its pulled.

I'll get pictures of the parts and the list, its going to be a minute though.

Here's a picture of the A/C system under the hood, I pulled it from Mitsu ASA so its a hard to look at.

The top two arrows are pointing to the mounting points of the A/C condenser, its sits in front of the radiator. You can see if its there just by popping the hood and looking to see if anythings attached to the mounting points or not... The far right arrow pointing at the container is where that red connector plugs into in your #4 picture.

Heres a pile of that can, condenser, and a few of the A/C lines removed.

This is where the A/C compressor sits, there are a lot of lines that attach to it.

If you were to scan for codes you might find out a bunch of clips that are disconnected.. Aslo things that you might want to take a look at. But it definitely wouldnt hurt to connect the ones that you can see!!

Ps: Dont forget to tag some of Gofer's posts as helpful, there is a lot of good info here!! :thumb:

dont worry about those vaccum lines and emision test.
I dont have it and i have my EGR blocked off and i always pass my emision test.

just do it like i did and you will be fine :)

^^how do i do that cause it was awesome info.

^^ the person i bought it from hacked everything haha i like to do things the correct way. I mean i would save some time and money but is getting all the vacuum line beneficial? i dont want to cut any corners (unless they dont hurt the car LOL

From what I can see, it just looks like the guy removed the emissions stuff. Like 4444 said, its kinda personal preference; I took all my emissions stuff out, but I get a CEL since I removed the solenoids and everything, of course. Doesn't bother me, but apparently it bothered the previous owner, so he probably pulled the bulb or cut the wire going to it. I think it's hilarious that he would go to all the trouble to cap all the lines and disconnect them, but instead of removing them, just crams a screw in the end and lets em flop around. :ohdamn: Lmao!

pulled the cluster out and yup CEL bulb was pulled along with some others...surprisingly it now turns on for 5 sec at start off then goes away...any idea? i doubt there are NO issues...

abs light is also on..im assuming that he took out the abs...wows:confused:

Take the car to advance or autozone and they will scan it for codes for free. Even if the light isn't on it could still have saved codes.
