This TECH ARTICLE will inform you of ALL the parts necessary to complete a A/T to M/T swap on a 95-99 DSM as well as listing a few variations in 2g model years that can cause you headaches in the middle of the conversion. If you’ve decided its time to make the conversion then I’m assuming you already own a service manual for your DSM model year and have a basic knowledge of what your car looks like under the hood. If you DO NOT already have a 2g service manual I suggest you head to your nearest auto parts store and pick one up or download these two from the links provided --->2g Eclipse Tech Info Manual and 2g Eclipse Service Manual<---

2G TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASE DIFFERENCES
Before you start tearing your car apart you MUST ensure that you get the correct drivetrain parts so you aren’t breaking stuff. ALL 2g AWD transmissions carry the W5M33 part number but there are (2) variations of it that not many people are aware of or they simply ignore. These (2) variations of the 2g AWD tranny are W5M33-2-NPZT which was used on the ’95-’96 and the W5M33-2-MUZT which were found on ’97-’99 DSM’s. Both W5M33 transmissions carry the same basic design but both have a unique front differential gear ratio. Meaning if you mix and match a ’95-’96 transmission with a ’97-’99 transfer case you’ll break stuff because you’ll be constantly putting a load on your center diffs spider gears and viscous coupling. It‘s possible to use a ’95-’96 transmission on a ’97-’99 DSM (or vice versa) as long as the transmission and transfer case came from the SAME model year DSM.

Sometimes DSM parts get tossed around and mixed up and in some cases its very possible to mix a ’95-’96 transmission with a ’97-’99 transfer case on accident. The following video I pulled DIRECTLY from JT's tech articles that Jack himself made, be sure to watch it over and over until you know how to tell a ’95-’96 transfer case from a ’97-’99. Typically the late/early model 2g transmissions were stamped with the part number however Jack also shows you a quick and easy way to figure out what year transmission you have as well if yours for whatever reason wasn’t stamped. Here's a link to the video you MUST watch --->Jack Transmission 2g T-Case and Tranny Differences<---

Below is a chart of the reduction ratios (tooth count) on the AWD drivetrain parts showing the differences between the '95-'96 and '97-'99.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION PARTS LIST
Somethings you can get away with buying used from a donor 2g and others it might just be easier to suck up the cost and head to the local Mitsu dealer to get what you need. For the smaller items that are necessary to do the 5-speed swap I’ve also included the part numbers (listed in parenthesis) so you can come up with a list to walk down to the dealer if you have to. When I did the swap it seemed like I was at the dealership trying to explain to them what the part was for way longer than I should have so hopefully the extra leg work getting you the info saves you some time at the dealer.

After you do the A/T to M/T swap your cruise control and reverse lights won't work unless you find a M/T engine wiring harness. Getting the M/T wiring harness isn't necessary and won't effect driveability at all you'll just lose creature comforts and it might be alittle tougher to back out of busy parking lots. The above list of parts can look a bit intimidating but if you come across a good donor M/T GSX/TSi AWD with most of the parts then you'll be set since the smaller stuff is fairly inexpensive to pick up from the dealer. Stay tuned for the step by step A/T to M/T swap how-to so you can see how all these parts come together...
