will putting 280cams hurt anything on a stock head?just using stock springs retainers and valves?

i have reved pf2's to 8k for over a year with no issues. if i didnt have the manley springs and retainers i wouldnt have the 280's in my car now. its not worth the risk of valve float and damaging the head/block in my own opinion...

If you want to run 280 cams, you need to use stronger springs and retainers. For $208 on ebay for the crower set of springs/retainers I don't see why you would pass it up. It's very recommended!

yea im getting the springs and retainers in 2months,just didnt know if its ok as long as i dont over rev, thanks for the input guys

So if I did the FFWD DKS combo 1 which is a 264/272 on stock springs and retainers I would be fine? And what does everyone here think about these?

I had the DKS 272's in my car, and spun it to 8500 regularly with stock valvetrain, youll be fine.

To the OP, i wouldnt suggest 280's until you get the S&R kit, its alot of lift and not worth the chance of floating a valve like stated above.

Actual first hand experience here.

awder's 2g, nearly 25,000 miles on a stock 2G head. No issue with BC280's. Takes his to 8500 on a regular(daily) basis.

A friends mirage- hard to put a number on, but nearing tw of full years of 8500rpm.

Me, actually on a stock 1.6L head. 3000 miles with over 200 8000+rpm pulls. No issue.

In the LSR 1G, we went over 200mph, have gone to 9000rpm more times than I can count and generally raped the motor with Crower 414's on properly shimmed stock valve springs.

A friend took a 264/272 combo to 9250 on a stock 1G head for 3 years, Somewhere near 15,000 miles and 400 passes. He dropped a valve at the track finally on one of his low 11 second passes.

If that does not answer the question, I am not sure what will. If you can't do this without issue, there is something wrong.

So he did lose a valve though. Which most people don't have happen. I know Kevin at Jacks lost a valve on 272's and stock valve train. IMO upgrading springs and retainers right now is worth it because pulling the head later is not cost effective.

That car is way beyond what 9 out of 10 people here would do. Three solid years of abuse. I mean daily driver abuse. I think it even let go on a misshift at the track. But it was at the track.

Again, we went 201mph on stock springs. Need I say more.

Now say, anything above FP4R does deserve a spring upgrade. And with that in mind, only one spring is even worthy of being run in our engines. The Kiggly Beehives. Again, first hand experience with these as well.

What do you expect out of a real race part. Not something that pretends to be an upgrade.

I don't know about cams, but what matters for the springs selection is something called ramp rate. Don't know exactly what it means, but it has something to do with how the profile of the cam lobe looks??? And going from closed to open valve position. That is why on a really big cams, the cam lobes look, or are called "square". It is OK to run 272's - HKS, WEB, FP2's with single, even stock springs, but is a different for FP 2X's for example. Try and call Robert from FP. He is the guy who knows this shit well.

Difference between fp2 and fp2x cam ramp rates:

If stockers are ok with fp2 cams, then there's nothing wrong with upgrade singles with fp2x cams. Fp3x cams are a different story. fp3 cams have the same ramp rate as fp2x cams.
