Vancouver,
I let a buddy take a car for a day. He ended up taking it for a 140mile trip. Once he got back he was telling how nice my car is this and that and how fast it is. Then he mentions to me that it starts to misfire around 4K. I take it for a spin to see wahts up and floor it in fifth and i see boost shoot up past 18 psi., i let of right away

He told me he had it floored for good majority of the trip when he was driving it and car was misfiring and he kept his foot down thinking its somewhat normal. wtf.

I checked the mbc to find out the adjusting screw has fallen out.

Now he's been boosting for who knows how long. He told me manifold was red hot when he pulled over, and the temperature needle was pointing at red, (my rad fuse died),
SO the car was overheated and boosted past 20 psi on stock fuel, (rewired pump) being the only mod.

Now i dont know if im too paranoid but i hear like there is ticking noise now, My car has only 147,000 kms on it, i doubt it was lifters. What is it that I should check for to see if my car is ok. I plan of pressuring the coolant system to see if the headgasket is ok from overheating the car. What else is it that i should check considering that he was boosting it for who knows how long on 24 psi as he said.

I have the car set on stock boost right now, hose going from j pipe to wastegate.
Car seems to run fine other than ticking noise. Rods?

So question is what should i check for?

Take it to a shop, and see what's broken. Amazing to hear your motor isn't blown. Whatever is broken though, your friend is obligated to pay for, as that is idiocy like I haven't witnessed for a looong time. Don't check it yourself, make your friend pay for shop labors. It's the least he can do.

Edit: I forgot to mention, if any problems are documented by a shop, then you'll have some kind of legal documentation proving that a problem exists, and why, just in case it ever (well, hopefully not, at least) comes to a legal dispute.

Wow. That is all I have to say. Flooring it in 5th is not the best idea in the first place.

Flooring it in 5th, overheating the engine, and running WAY too much boost for stock injectors - you'll be lucky if the thing doesn't spew oil all over the highway with a head warped worse than a stack of vinyl left on the front seat of the car on a hot summer day.

Do a compression test. Tell us if it holds. I wouldn't suggest driving it for any length of time until you can get everything checked. You may be able to save it if you don't go all crazy on a dying engine.

Then again, it may be 1 in 1X10^100 and everything is fine.

EDIT: You beat me to it Boo5t. Good points, I second the shop. All of my friends are cheapskates, so it wouldn't work for me! WTF

If you got a stock turbo i would be checkin that too along with what the other members suggested. I'm going to say that your engine life was dramatically reduced and that your oil is pretty much destroyed along with 90% of your seals and gaskests :toobad:, i would agree with taking it to the shop before you drive it again, then slap your friend for being such retard noob... like this :beatentodeath:

sorry to hear that. my friend was in the same boat about a year ago after leting another one of our friends hold his test drive his car. long story short we spent all our spring break replaceing a motor with a rod through it.

I hope this is a lesson learned:toobad:. Only 3 people drive my car
ME
MYSELF and
I LOL

Fuel cut is around to save your engines butt when things like this happen. It was cutting out when it was dangerously out of fuel. Check for shaft play in your turbo, and assume you'll be needing a head gasket soon. When part of the metal ring in the HG is damaged due to detonation or when part of the HG itself is exposed because of overheating warpage, it will steadily keep on being eaten away. That is to say, it might seem perfect now, but in a (day, week, month, year) you'll find yourself using coolant or oil.

Beating on an engine while it's overheated (or driving it in general) can also damage the bearings and the cylinder walls. Hopefully those haven't been damaged, because when they go it starts to get really expensive.

Your friend sounds like a real dumbass. If he's actually a friend at all, he'll bring the beer and tools when you're swapping out HG's, no matter how long it is before it blows. Honestly, I'd tear it apart and do it now justs for the peice of mind that it's a fresh engine. Good luck.

Just hook it back up correctly on low boost, drive it around and see if you have any problems. There is nothing preventative you can really do, now, except see what's up with it. I don't know why the car wouldn't fuel cut on him to protect it.

First punch your friend in the face & then kick him in the nuts (normally I wouldn't stoop to this level, but I think it fits in this case :toobad: ) Then proceed to do a compression test, boost leak test, coolent system pressure test, etc.

Wow thats low... Maybe you should wait until he gets a car and hope its a Honda so you can "drive" it Possibly 200 miles foot to the floor.... But make sure connecting rods shoot through engine blocks before turning the keys in Bad friend... Very bad. :notgood:

Backfiring at 4000 rpm, means that you having fuel cut, and its your computer too. Mine used to do that in 3rd and 4th, but when i upgraded my turbo i also upgraded my computer and my fuel system, and since then no fuel cut or backfire. Good Luck.

:cry:Yeah he must have been talking about fuel cut.. i mean fuel cut might have even saved your car if it isnt already destroyed.. ouchies for you

Hey thanks very much for the replys.
I checked the compression today at work.
155 all accross. Tomorrow I'll check the coolant system. I'll preassurize it and see how it holds? Since it gets dark fast i doubt I'll have any time to check for boost leaks.
Car drives fine, other than ticking but I had others listen to it (experienced mechanics) and say its nothing, just lifters.
Some oil was missing ,catch cans, were filled with more oil then when i checked teh car over before i handed it to a "friend".
I also drove the car it drove fine. Boosts fine np.

Hey now check this, I found pliers in the rad fan plastic cover. Pliers man, f*ucking pliers. No wonder fuse died and car overheated. Fan couldnt turn. Pliers fell down and blocked the fan from turning.Who knows what he was doing. He might have even tryed to raise the boost on purpose and then took the screw out and pretended it fell out once he realized what he did.

Its alright tho, we are sparring on Monday, he's got a fight coming up. Time for me to be a "friend".
Thanks guys.:thumb::thumb::thumb:
Any more suggestions on what to do?
