20g td06 HP record?

Mine is a billet 20g (TD06 compressor) with TD05 7cm turbine housing. I haven't been able to do alot of testing yet. From reading this I should have went with a anti-surge comp housing but I didn't.

Ill probably end up moving to a td06 cover simply because in a down firing configuration there will be fewer chances for a boost leak, and the charge pipe will be further away from the exhaust manifold thus reducing the charge temp (unlike a j pipe setup).

Ill eventually change but in the meantime... my advice to anyone considering this setup is DO IT!

Why all the hate on 20g's in other threads? seems like a pretty badass turbo thats cheap and make good power without having to drop alot of coin.

The 20g is a great street turbo setup. In fact, i miss the big hit I would get with it compared to the relatively softer hit of my FP71HTA turbo. However, therein lies the one negative of a 20g turbo. Even with a TD06SL2 turbine wheel in a 7cm housing, I would get compressor surge once I started pushing over ~20psi from about 4.2k to 5.2k rpms (on a 2.4L engine). There just isn't enough oomph driving the compressor at high boost in those lower rpms.
There are a few things you can do to address the issue. Running a TD06H turbine would easily drive it but will also spool slower. or Getting an 8cm housing from FP and running a TD05 or TD06SL2 would also likely solve the issue but again, with a bigger housling you will also have more lag. Which is the lesser of two evils? I couldn't tell you as I have not tested all the variations myself.
A third option and something I wanted to try but never got to was using a TD06 anti-surge compressor housing with a TD06SL2 turbine in a 7cm housing. If it kept it from surging that is probably the best case scenario for running a 20g. Yes an anti-surge housing does give up a tiny bit of max flow but not enough to worry about IMHO.

In the end I just went for the FP71HTA. It is a better compressor wheel with more overall flow and spools almost as hard as the 20g. The other big thing for me was that the 71HTA places the wastgate actuator in a different position than a typical 20g actuator. This allowed me to swap back my OEM fan in place of the feeble slim fan I was using which made a huge difference in cooling. So there ya go. Those are my thoughts and experience with the 20g for what it's worth.

this is interesting feedback. but I question the surge you were getting. at those rpms I suspect you had BOV flutter or something else. I ran the 20g with 6SL2 wheel in the 12CM TS housing. which should equal a 7cm single in flow. I could make it surge a little but only from stabbing at low 2500rpm in 4th or 5th. at 4000k there wasnt even a hint of surge.

is the 71 mated with surge cover? 5h or 6Sl2?

My 71hta has a surge cover and 5 wheel. All of them should. i know fo made a few with the 7cm housing and 6sl2 wheel but supposedly testing showed thst to be worse than the 8cm 5h combo. Thing is a bad little bi***. I went 122 full weight 1g on 24 psi. I'm spiking 33 now holding about 26/27 at redline (prob over spinning it). Curious to see how much more mph I got out of it. If the thrust bearing goes I will upgrade it and go td06sl2 for better high boost performance

With my billet 20g, anti-surge cover, and 05h in a 7cm hotside I can punch it at any rpm in any gear and never surge. Anti-surge covers work.

Running 25psi. If I punch it at low rpm's in 5th it goes to around 28psi.

I would think running a TD06SL2 20g in a 8cm housing would work better than in a 7cm housing. Surprised I dont see more people using a 8cm housing with this turbo. 20g was one of my favorite turbos. I plan on putting one on my daughters SR powered 240sx.

I personally feel the lag of a 8cm and 20g would sort of take the fun out of it especially when you go with td06 or sl2 wheels. For that you can get something a little more modern that can flow way more air than that set up. I personally feel my 71hta is right on the brink of the perfect street turbo for a car reving to 7500. If and when I ever go sl2 I might regret it a bit.

I was looking recently and fp had greens for 999. That would be a better option In my opinion

A 20g with the 6SL2 wheel in 8cm housing could be the ticket. The larger housing could potentially help counter the surge that's been associated with it in the smaller, quicker spooling, 7cm housing.

I ran a td06h4 20g in a 7cm housing. Full boost by 4200 Rpms and no surge at all. Any td05h 20g I've ever ran had to be driven around the surge. Also, strangely enough the transient response of the td06h4 seemed faster than an 05h. Probably the inertia of the heavier turbine keeping shaft speeds up between shifts.

Perhaps the surge was a bit lower rpm's but not much. Honestly it's been a while since I ran that setup so that is my best estimate from memory. To clarify it was a billet 20g in an Evo 7cm housing fitted with a tdo6sl2 turbine. Regardless, the surge was very obvious and I had to lower my boost (controlled with Link v.3) in those rpm's to compensate which took all the fun right out of the 20g. I know the difference between BOV flutter and surge; they feel and sound very different. I was getting ready to put an anti-surge cover on it when the FP71hta went on sale for $999 so I sold my billet 20g and haven't looked back.
Would I do another 20g? Yes, I think so. I absolutely love the hit with my 2.4L setup but would definately run an anti-surge cover from the get-go next time.

I recently went to E-85 and the power and torque gain has been amazing but have not hit the track yet, hitting 35 psi seeing about 47 lbs/min. Probably low 11's now.. I am looking to have a SMIM on and a 450 wally and a external waste gate on by next track season..

This is with a leaking exhaust gasket and a injector failing. I still need to get back and get some new numbers now that everything is fixed.

Although the peak numbers are nice, that is one lagggyyy turbo. 300 wheel torque isnt acheived till 52xx rpm. That is fpRED/Black territory.

Did 392hp 412tq with a tdo6sl2 20g on a stock long block SR20. Just injectors, FMIC, exhaust and Z32 maf with Enthalpy rom tune to stock ecu.
24 psi on a mild rom tune.
I realize this isn't a 4g63 but I also don't think the SR is as efficient as a 4g63.
20g still is a great turbo.

This thread is getting old now but just wanted to update on my 20g progress. Made 417whp 400wtq @ 26psi. on E75. @ English Racing. Ran out of injector (FIC 1150cc) so that's it for now until I get more fuel.

Billet wheel, 10cm hot side.
