2.0L Automatic having trouble going into drive

I bought my 2g about a week and a half ago and I was told that the transmission computer was messing up on it. It's an automatic. I've been trying to take it to a transmission specialty shop, but can't ever catch them open. It's been driving okay just downshifting a little rough and idling high, but yesterday evening I went out and started the car and put it in gear, but when I do it acts likes it's just in neutral. So I have to put it back in park and shift it back into drive a few more times before it actually goes into gear. What could be my problem? Hopefully not the whole transmission seeing as how I can't afford that right now.

i think your best bet is to switch it to a 5 speed faster funner and less of a head ache

I would much rather have a standard, but like i said i don't really have the money for that right now... i just graduated high school.

have you checked the trans fluid when it gets hot

Yeah that was one of the first things I did.
