I recently bought a 1ga 1.8 eclipse with a "messed up" transmission. I checked the tcu and realized it was burned. Upon further inspection of the car I found this intercooler of some sort tied to the bumper. It had two hoses coming from my automatic transmission. I know it does not belong in the front of the bumper by the strap that was holding it down. I believe the hoses are suppose to go into the bottom of the radiator. What is this thing and what is the purpose? Where does it belong so that I can place it back?

sorry for dark pic

I am not sure because I don't have an automatic or non turbo. But I am pretty sure that's a fuel cooler. You need to hook up a gas line to it then have the other end go to your motor.:hellyeah:

Looks like a tranny cooler hook it back up to the lines on your tranny.

Ya..looks like a tranny fluid cooler. A lot of DSM owners will run the cooler instead of having the fluid run through the radiator.. which saves tonnage on tranny wear and keeps the viscosity of the fluid longer since it gets a change to cool down...

I dont know if this helps but the car had it inside the front bumper with a piece of string tying it to the bumper should I just unplug the hoses from the radiator and connect it to this???

It is most likely an after market cooler that the previous owner picked up at a part's store. It is most likely not a stock part (My cars are both manual, so I'm not sure). If it's not connected to anything, take it out and set it on a shelf, trash it or sell it. Or if you like it, find a place to put it and make some modifications so it will stay there. If it is connected and you don't want it anymore, disconnect the lines and plug the holes.

*sigh*

That.. is a Trans Fluid Cooler. Your Transmission probably has two hoses that run to the bottom of the transmission. Take those hoses out, plug the two holes at the bottom of the trans, mount that 'cooler' you found to the front of the radiator, and run the trans lines to it.

OR...

Do something no one would ever take the time to do....Run the Trans Fluid feed line to one side of that cooler, and run a hose from the exit side of that cooler... to the bottom of the trans.. then run a third line from the exit side of the radiator to the trans.

Double cooling! Hahah.

But no, seriously. Either Utilize or discard.
