hey guys. i just finished up the install of the 6 bolt into my 93. everything works fine except for the exhaust is coming out blue when i rev it. the car isnt under any load cause its on jackstands and the turbo doesnt have much if any shaft play. what could be the cause of the blue smoke. i know its not the rings cause the motor is brand new. could it be the air lines from the intake tube>? where should they all be? any ideas on why im burning oil?

wow u guys reply quick :thumb: but anyway the the motor is around 155 across each cyl. so i know the rings are good. the car blows blue when it starts then stops at idle the blows more when i rev it. someone said that it may be the oil seals for the turbo, as i dont know how old it is or any mileage. all i know is that is has little to no shaftplay. also i am running the 1g race vacumme line setup. and my turbo doesnt seem to be spooling when i rev it but then again i may just not hear it. i need to get a gauge

Does it start to smoke after idling for a couple of minutes? If so, I would guess the valve stem seals.

One way to check your valve stem seals is to take off the exhaust manifold and check the exhaust runners and exhaust valves for oil on them.

Also, I would replace the PCV valve with an OEM one and make sure that the oil return line isn't clogged. Excessive pressure can cause oil to blow by the seals in the turbo.

Have you checked the LICP for oil?

When you say "could it be the air lines from the intake tube" you do have them plugged in... Rght?

yea i def need to replace the pcv with an oem one. how do i check the one thats in there now? and as for those lines where do they go exactly. also the motor from head to pan is new oem that has been run in someone elses car with no problems for 1000 miles so its my stuff thats making this problem

Just because it was rebuilt doesn't mean that stuff still can't go wrong. Maybe the valve stem seals didn't seat properly. I would not worry about testing the current PCV valve. They are cheap and you might as well just buy a new one.

Was the motor compression tested before it smoked? Depending on how long ago that test was, it might be wise to perform another compression test.

well the motor is fine and that im sure of. it is 2 months old if that. Everything from head to pan is fine in terms of the physical motor. now as for the turbo and the other lines. that is what i am sure of

Blue smoke...blue smoke usually means anti-freeze with some oil being burned, just oil burning would be white to greyish smoke, but if its blue and smells....well its hard to explain how it smells, but it will give you a headache. Also since its been recently rebuilt check the head studsto make sure they didnt loosen any, its rare but its not unheard of. Look at the coolant lines going into the turbo to make sure non of them are leaking coolant into the turbo, then thriough ICPs then into the cylinders to be burned off and sent out the exhaust as blueish smoke.

That sir is wrong::|
Blue smoke = oil
white smoke = coolant (smells sweet)
grayish smoke = possibility of oil being dumped into the exhaust system. Or oil and coolant burning

You can do a search and come up with lots of documentation supporting my analasys. I am sure that most would disagree with you that blue smoke means coolant.

Now back on topic. I have seen engines that are freshly rebuilt fail due to things not seating properly or improper assembly. What gives you the ESP to know that its not the engine. If it is smoking blue that means that smoke is entering the combustion chamber. So obviously it is very likely that something has failed. I am still suggesting the compression test. I can't hurt to do and it only takes 20 minutes to perform.

i will do another compression test soon too see but the test was done less then a month ago with the motor in another car with a different turbo setup and it ran perfect with no blue smoke. all that happened was that the motor left that car and was put into mine. so that is why i am terribly sure it isnt anything to do with the physical motor itself. so as of now lets assume that the compression is fine

If the compression was fine, I would take off the exhaust manifold and check the exhaust runners and exhaust valves for oil. Bad valve stem seals will not effect compression. Even if they are new, I have seen many cases of them not seating properly.
I would also check the LICP for oil, and the exhaust side of the turbo for oil. If you had a blown turbo seal, there would be oil residue in your O2 housing.

The PCV valve and the clogged oil drain line wouldn't affect compression either.
