I just installed a 1g CAS, and I can’t get it to run right. I’ve put it in correctly many times with all the marks lined up, and it will only run when I have the sensor really advanced. When it runs, it idles around 2-3k with 15 in vacuum. When I have it where it should be, it idles around 700 rpm with 2 in vacuum. When I try to rev it, it doesn’t do anything unless I have it really advanced. Is there a chance that I am a few teeth off on the cam gears? I had them off when I replaced the original CAS and it was a pain to get them back on.

Verify mechanical timing (belt, cam and crank gears, oil pump/balance shaft belt and gears if still present)

Have you also changes the firing order? Iirc you must swap wires to get a 2g to run on a 1g cas.

I would say that your cam timing is off.

Verify mechanical timing, then use a timing light to install the cas properly. You can’t just turn it until the car runs “right”.

I swapped plug wires and inverted the CAS signal through link. Is there a way that I could correct the timing without taking the belt off? it is in my driveway at the moment and I can't get the car in the air

Have you done as Donnie suggests and hooked up a timing light and ground out the timing tab or do it in link to make sure you are set at 5* BTDC? It is very easy to do and the ECU relies on you setting it at 5* BTDC.

Yes I had a timing light on it last night. Grounded timing. When I had the bottom end at 5* it would barely run. When I was playing around with the CAS is when I could get it to run/rev, but was way too advanced

And another one. Verify your mechanical timing. Would only take a few minutes

I appreciate the replies. I will be checking the timing once I get some time. I believe it is the intake cam that is out of time because when I originally took the gears off that one was a pain to get back on. If I find that gear is out of time, is there a way to get it back in time without taking the belt completely off?

Probably, but for your situation I'd take it all apart and make sure it's done right.

Its best to just untension and redo. It isn't a difficult job. Just a little tedious

What can I use to take the tension off of the hydraulic tensioner? I took it to a shop when I had the t belt done and I don't have the special long bolt to do so

Then buy that bolt off amazon :)

There's also another bolt on our cars that fits there but you'll have to search.

It's a convenience. That being said I wont do the job without it. If you're in a pinch make one out of some all thread.

You don't necessarily have to use the long bolt on the hydraulic tensioner to remove it... You can simply loosen the eccentric bolt, then take the two bolts out holding the auto-tensioner to the block.

To re-install slowly and carefully compress the auto tensioner in a vice until you can install the grenade pin. then bolt it back in place.

I understand this isn't ideal, but it is an option if you don't have the bolt or are in a pinch. You don't NEED the bolt. It is highly recommended though.

Still a 7 bolt, just installed the 1G CAS to eliminate the under cam gear CAS and the CPS.

Good news, it’s timed and runs again. Timing was way off. Here’s some pictures of the marks after I re timed it. My balance shafts are deleted as well

It never seems to end with this car. Fixed the timing and blew a head gasket shortly after. Seems like my luck is a little down lately ROFL

Such is the life! Had mine down all summer for the new I/C, put it back together and the clutch slips under power now. At least more power is confirmed!
