My car has a 1G "blacktop" cam angle sensor in his 97 GST. I was having some issues with the car. I checked the timing last night while the car was idling, and it was showing 40* advanced at idle

I adjusted the timing down to ~7.5* BTDC when the car was running, (car runs better now), but I'm pretty sure that the ecu adjusts timing at idle.

Is there a way to keep the ecu from adjusting timing while the car is running?

I know the 1G guys can ground the timing out, can you do this on a 97-99?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help

I just checked the shop manual and that suggest that the only way to check the timing is with a scantool (or dsmlink).
