1G CAS adjust while idling?

Just trying to cover all of my bases before I cause any more problems. I read the tech article covering base timing. When I go to set my ignition timing, do I have a friend adjust the CAS while the car is idling and I am viewing the markings and timing light read out, or does the car have to be shut off while each adjustment is made?

You can have a friend adjust it while you watch, or you can adjust it yourself, tighten, and recheck. The car needs to be on.

how many degrees do you set the base timing to?
