Hi all -

My car is in the shop in the process of a 6 bolt swap, so now's the time to do anything that normally would require some down time.

I have a friend who can do powdercoating for me for free where he works. He's already done my valve cover, intake pipe and intercooler pipe. I'd like my 1G BOV to match the pipe.

No brainer on the valve cover and pipes since there are no moving parts to screw up.

Can the BOV be powdercoated without doing any damage to it? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Jimmy

I imagine if you put a plastc tape around the vac nipple and also on the whole bottom flange (just the mating surface) it would be alright. Honestly though, i'd just sand it and nail it with some High temp rattle can. Unless you're getting a real good deal on coating. If so, hook a brother up!

I would say just cover the flange (where it attaches to the IC pipe), dump tube opening, and vacuum connection. This way you are sure nothing gets inside.

Yes just put a nipple over the vaccum line output, cover up the venting hole and gasket side of the BOV since you wouldnt want those things powdercoated. It will work fine. Hope it looks nice!

Thanks for the responses.

Brings up a 2nd question...the flange on the intercooler pipe is already powdercoated. This won't create a seal problem, will it? I thought it would be fine as long as I use a good gasket and didn't powdercoat the bottom of the BOV.

I cant imagine that would be a problem with powder coating, so long as you clamp it down nice and tight. I would worry more if it was just high temp paint but I would give it a try with powder coated...

I have asked several people to give their own interpretation on powercoating the 1G BOV (and the process involved). I'm still waiting. Here is one specific thread I recall. You can also ask Daren about his process - he has done his own 1G BOV.

Make sure you post some pictures of the end result of all this powder coating. Should be sweet looking. :thumb:

I'll post some pics when I get the chance.

I've decided to have my stock rims powder coated. Anybody know the color name of the 92-94 style rims? I've always liked the grey rims with the black car. It must be some kind of metallic light grey or dark silver.

Anybody know off hand what the center cap is made of? It's been awhile since I had mine out and I don't recall. Wondering if the center cap is plastic. If so, it wouldn't survive the sand blasting and powder coating process, right?

on a 92, it's plastic.

The only reason I would advise against actually powder coating the BOV is because it has rubber seals and the diaphram that may not withstand the oven temps. But, look into that. The last thing you want is a cool looking BOV that is only good for a paper weight.

High temp spray can it is then. I'd rather not take a chance with sending the BOV through the oven given that info.
