First of all I am new to these DSM’s, so please bear with me.

I have a bunch of parts, I have a 1g engine extra that I had bought years ago but I don’t have all the parts for it. I also have a 2g engine that spun a bearing and got the crankshaft. So I’m wanting to build a kinda Frankenstein 1g/2g engine starting with a 1g bottom end and head. So that being said I would like to know if my ideas would work.

Can I use a 2g intake manifold on it because the port holes on the head for this engine are quite a bit larger than the 2g head that I have sitting here?

Also will 2.4l cam gears work? They’re smaller than factory ones I know but I’ve heard that people sometimes use smaller gears.

Also is it necessary to use the oil cooler because the 2g engines that I have doesn’t have it? I wanted to put a 2g filter housing on it if it will work.

I’ve taken the engine apart down to short block to make sure that it’s good and it is. So I’d rather not mess it up but I don’t want to buy a bunch of parts if I can help it.

Welcome to the site!

Is your 1G engine a 6-bolt or 7-bolt? (How many bolt holes are on the crankshaft on the transmission end?)

The 2G intake manifold will not seal on a 1G head. You must use the 1G intake with the 1G head. Since you’re building a “Frankenstein”, why not use the 2G head with 2G intake?

In general, you cannot just change cam gears to a different size. The size of the gears is related to the size of the crankshaft sprocket and changing the size will change the ratio of how many turns they will see per one revolution of the crankshaft.

Oil cooler usage is dependent on many factors including (but not limited to) intended use, climate, etc. Even then, opinions vary. What is your intended use? You mention wanting to use the 2G oil filter housing - this will bolt on only if the 1G block is a 7-bolt. We need to know exactly what you’re starting with if we are going to be of any further help.

The engine I’m working with is a 6-bolt I’m not gonna bother with changing oil filter housing or using a 7-bolt intake but one of the cam gears on the 6-bolt engine was broken so can I use cam gears from a regular 7-bolt engine and it still be ok?

Also I am mainly going to have it for a spare or to sell I have almost everything to complete it including clutch transmission exhaust manifold turbo ect. But I don’t have an intake that will work unless the 7bolt one would work but the holes on the head are much larger than the intake that I have. I’m assuming that is why it wouldn’t seal properly?

If the 7-bolt is a DOHC, yes, that should be fine.

Yes, that is why. See: intake manifold difference. 1G intake manifolds often come up for sale in the classifieds on this site. Keep an eye out and I’m sure you’ll find one. The suggestion to keep the 2G head and 2G intake manifold remains a possibility, too.
