420A 1999 Automatic Mitsubishi Eclipse RS Trans fluid?

Hello, I need help figuring out which transmission fluid I need for my automatic transmission on my 99 Eclipse RS all stock with automatic transmission 2.0 420a engine.

I tried reading the manual and couldn’t figure out what I actually need and it also seems like the original recommended fluid is discontinued?

I drove the car and switched it from gears as the manual states and checked while car was in neutral. And it looks like I need to add some fluid. I tried looking through the threads on here I didn’t seem to find the answer. Thanks in advance.

You probably figured it out, but the automatic transmission behind a 420a is also a A604/41te Chrysler automatic transmission

Original spec was ATF+3 (discontinued) recommend replacement is ATF+4 it's a much better fluid. And backwards compatible.

I never got a clear cut response. I ended up adding a little bit of Valvoline Maxlife Multi car ATF today actually . O’rillys and Valvoline both claim it’s compatible. I only added a little bit to try and top off. I hope it doesn’t mess anything up. Valvoline also claims it’s compatible with 95% of cars. What do you think? And thanks.

Honestly likely not gonna do harm with a little bit. Just remember ATF +4 in the future.
Would of came sooner but im new to naviging the forums

It’s not your fault. I appreciate the response. It’s frustrating because Valvoline says ATF+4 isn’t compatible but the Maxlife multi vehicle is. I provided pictures for proof. My specs on the site are correct 99 RS 2.0 Engine 420a with auto transmission.

I can't find the Mitsubishi specific bulletin right now (I think I had it stored elsewhere). But here is a part of the Chrysler bulletin that called out the 2g Talons (same thing, same 41te used) during the years of the ATF+4 change over. But don't worry about that little bit of ATF, it shouldn't be affected unless you start throwing quarts at it. In the future get a trans filter and do a full service with ATF+4 if you want and do some preventative maintenance.

The sad part about it is I see that all the time parts stores recommending stuff that's not entirely correct. I work on cars for a living.

Honestly I need to see if I can get a sticky on the 420a section for stuff like this. Would improve searches and responses.

yes I’ve heard the Talon being the same. I did get a response from a person that sells a lot of Mitsubishi Eclipses and parts on Facebook/Ebay. He said he used ATF+4 Valvoline on one of his 97’ 420a. So you’re the second guy letting me know ATF+4. I added maybe a quarter no more than half of 1 quart. I added very minimal because i didn’t want to overfill. Unfortunately, I bought a gallon of this Maxlife stuff. The scary part is when mechanics go and get these fluids at the auto stores and don’t think much and just add it. That’s why I put this question in this thread for that same reason that auto stores get it wrong all the time. But thanks for clarifying and even following up.

Valvoline’s website when inputting the vehicle only gives options to 2 engines and not all 3 when it comes to the 95-99 Eclipse, 2.0L and 2.4L, however as far as the 2.0L option is concerned so it was likely the 4G63T it accounted for since it doesn’t specify 420a or 4G63T or NA or Turbo
