What if any are the differences between a 1.8 automatic and a 2.0 automatic first gen? I've removed a 1.8 auto and was about to put it into a 2.0 car when I was told they are different. If they are different can the swap still be made?

According to my Chiltons manual they are diffrent. It doesn't say about them even being to bolt up but it is giving diffrent part numbers. So I would think even if it does bolt up it may be alot diffrent internally.

I would not be surprised if it bolts up, from what I've read the manual trans from a 1.8 will fit the 2.0 and vice-versa, so i would ASSUME that the auto won't be any different. Be prepared to replace it quickly though. Since the part numbers are different, then the internals are probably different. I would think that the 1.8's trans wouldn't be nearly as strong as the 2.0's because since there's less torque with the 1.8 cheaper components could be used. Should work for a while without hard launches, and will probably do fine at least till you can rebuild your old one.

Both motors (the 4G37-1.8L and the 4G63NT-2.0L ) used the same F4A22 tranny for the 1G style years.

Turbo motors had a stronger auto tranny just as the manual tranny is a stronger version (F5M33) with a different final drive ratio for the turbo motor.

If you head to the 2G body, then different trannys are apparent.
