Sorry this is my first post..might be repetative. I just got a 97 talon tsi and i am building a 6 bolt main for it.. my goal is 380 hp i am hoping to get a big 16g turbo for it. i am looking at starting to order my parts and get things rolling, i am currently on punishment racing looking at the manifolds and i am wondering can i use an external waste gate so i can get better boost control? thanks

Yes.

Internal wastegate must be removed.

I would also get a bigger turbo so that you can reach your goal much easier.

I'm running an evo3 16g, I decided to stick with the internal wastegate. I ported everything out fairly well to avoid boost creep, but I still have problems with creep. An external wastegate is probably your best bet. You'll need to weld the flapper shut aswell.

you can run an external gate just do as said above get the wg flapper welded shut and the internal removed. A buddy is running this setup up and its apparentyl working well for him. you could always get an o2 dump to help with control.

Well i was looking at the punishment racing kit for 2800 i have to money but i think its way over kill for my goal... would an 18g be better for hitting the goal

Take time, slow down, and don't rush into buying anything just yet. Just lurk on this site for a week checking out what others have posted. Look under the Members tab at some of the Dyno Sheets to get some ideas on what you'd need.

You can purchase a new or modify your existing existing manifold to accomodate the external wastegate. You would then need to weld the flapper shut as mentioned. You could also purchase an O2 housing that has a flange for the external. Then you would have to remove the flapper and port the hole.

After running an external wastegate, I will NEVER run internal again.
An improperly sized external setup is plenty capable of creep as well though.
