14B wastegate questions

I recently installed a 14B setup on my 2G.. The wastegate is completley closed (the car is running open boost).. The bolt that goes into the wastegate is "unscrewed" pretty far. I am going to install a MBC this weekend but i was wondering if this would be a waste of time, as long as that wastegate bolt is unscrewed? or would the MBC control the boost even with it unscrewed.. ?
 
When your turbo reaches stock boost about 10-12psi, the diaphram in the wastegate should push the 'bolt' out towards the hotside of the turbo. If it's not currently fuctioning then no a MBC would not do anything as far as controlling boost. If you have an air compressor I would check to see if your wastegate will open at all, and at what psi, that should give you a good idea of what going on. Good luck!
 
To clarify you are saying that the wastegate is " unhooked" and building infinite boost? if that's the case the MBC wont do anything. The sole purpose of a boost controller is to essentially lie to the wastegate and allow you to build more boost before it opens up. For instance my 16g is gated at 8psi but I have my MBC bleed off enough air to allow me to run 14psi
 
Ok so then i should try to essentially "open" up the wastegate by tightening the bolt ? How should i proceed? Ill try to take a picture to show whats going on.. Its hard to explain.. Its not "unhooked" but it may be stuck closed. does that clarify at all?
 
There is no benefit to running an mbc in your situation unless you want the ability to turn the boost down.
 
Yes thats exactly what i want. I want to be able to run a steady 16psi under WOT instead of it doing whatever it wants.. ITs running wide open right now, so a MBC would allow me to turn it down, correct?
 
Do you have your wastgate hooked straight up to the j-pipe? Pics would be nice to tell whats going on. Also, a mbc is to turn up boost past stock pressure. A mbc would be useless if your wastegate wont open up on its own if its just running stock wastegate pressure. You may have a bad wastegate too. I bought a 14b for my awd and I hooked it up to run stock boost. I did a 2nd gear pull and the boost just kept rising and didnt stop. I borrowed a stock internal wastegate from a friend and it did fine running stock boost.

So you are running more than 16psi? Sounds like your wastegate isnt functioning properly. Im not fimilar with the 14b turbo but I would imagine that its the same as my 16g's waste gate. I attached a picture of my turbo with a little ghetto photo shop work and hopefully it helps. Let me know

* for a MBC you would install it between the IC pipe and the nipple on the wastegate***

14b's and 16g's are very similar..They both utilize the same turbine wheel..While the compressor wheel is different..Also the 14b is a 6cm turbine housing, while the 16g is a 7cm turbine housing..They are both tdo5 turbos..The 14b has spaced compressor fins while the 16g's run dual 6 blade wheels..
 
I thought they were fundementally the same setup since you can upgrade a 14b to 16g with no mods. I hope the photo helps and he can get his boost under control. You can run a certain amount of boost on a stock fuel system with either turbo..The 16g flows more wich means you probably wont be able to run 16psi on it..But the 14b I don't see a problem with that much boost.Unless your running lean..Which in case..You should actually have a logger...Or turn the boost down..
 
besides having a logger you can look at the compressor map for a 14b (assuming your fuel pump is working at peak performance) you can figure out what the lbs/min are at the psi you want to run and compare that to your injector duty cycle and what your fuel pump puts out at that same psi and have a base line for what boost you can run safely but the only true way to know is to have a logger and a wideband.
 
That is also a very good way to figure out what boost you can run..It's not as easy on 1g's tho, cause the fuel pressure is lower on 5speeds than it is for auto's..Which turns out that 1g 450's don't actually flow 450cc's..But 2g's do..Also 2g's have the same cams, and same fuel pressure..

That pic helps out greatly in helping me explain.. On my turbo where the wastegate is bolted on, there are a bunch of spacers.. Im guessing this is keeping the wastegate closed? is spaced out a good 1/2 inch or more. not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Maybe i can just purchase a wastegate that works.. Im guessing its very simple to swap those out.. Just pull that pin from the bolt holding it on the manifold, unscrew the two nuts holding it on the other side, right?

Someone is selling a 14b and a 16g wastegate actuator, both brand new. Which one should i purchase, if need be? thanks!

thats exactly what im going to do. But if that doesnt work, do you think replacing the wastegate actuator solve the problem?
 
Wow, somebody spaced it out? I used washers on mine because the flapper wasnt completely shut. Maybe a previous owner (honda owner) spaced it out to keep the flapper shut for a external gate maybe? Those are just some thoughts. Anyways, as Bud92gsx said take out those spacers and see if it fixes it. If it dont then i'd say get another acuator and that should fix your problem.
 
On that picture, the 2 bolts that are attached to the turbine housing is what im talking about.. Not where it is attached to the manifold where the flaps are located. I will remove those spacers, and test it out.

sorry for the copywrite infringment LOL. The bolt with the arrow pointing at it.. Does that effect the boost at all if it is spaced out?
 
From what I know of " shimming" those bolts is to get the flapper to seal tightly but it shouldnt effect it from opening up but if its a 1/2" then its possible that its keeping it closed or not opening up enough to let the excess pass by. Take the space out and try that. Id leave like 1 washer on it like how mines setup. Where did you get the turbo from for it to be like that?
